Standalone Toyota GR dealers appear to be on the cards for Australia – and perhaps other countries – as they potentially create a “sweet shop” for fans of hot hatches and sports cars, as opposed to volume models such as the Toyota RAV4.
At the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, where the Toyota GR Supra achieved its first podium finish in the Supercars category in just its second round of racing, we asked Toyota about the likelihood of independent showrooms for GR models locally after receiving a tip from one of its Supercars teams.
“It was announced at last year’s Japan Mobility Show that Toyota Gazoo Racing would be positioned globally as a standalone brand,” said John Pappas, vice president of sales, marketing and franchise at Toyota Australia Daily Sparkz in response.

“In Australia, we have invested significantly in TGR from a product and motorsport perspective. TGR has become a key pillar of our performance strategy and brand identity.”
“At this stage, TGR is a powerful sub-brand extension of our Toyota brand, however we are currently conducting a strategic review of TGR’s brand structure in Australia.”
While Toyota wouldn’t confirm any further details, standalone showrooms appear to be part of this review.
TGR’s elevation to one of Toyota’s five global brand pillars at the end of 2025 signals that Gazoo Racing is viewed as a key area of opportunity and focus for the giant Japanese automaker.
Toyota’s range of hot GR performance models, as opposed to the more tepid GR Sport variants, is expected to expand beyond vehicles such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla hot hatches, as well as the GR86 and GR Supra sports coupes already on sale in Australia – although global production of the Supra ends this month.
In December 2025, the V8-powered Toyota GR GT hybrid supercar was introduced as the first standalone GR road model, as the GR86 was paired with the Subaru BRZ and the GR Supra was paired with the BMW Z4.
Sales in Japan are scheduled for 2027, and Mr Pappas told Australian media in February 2026 that he was keen to see the high-end sports car in local showrooms.
As an extension of this, the GR GT could become the centerpiece of the first standalone GR showrooms in Australia.
The automaker did not specify when or how many dedicated GR dealers will be considered.
Other aspects of the planned establishment of Toyota Gazoo Racing as an independent brand in Australia were also not outlined.
Toyota Australia previously gave dealers the opportunity to sell its now-discontinued Toyota Racing Development (TRD) models, including TRD-tuned versions of the 2007 Toyota Camry-based Aurion sedan and the 2008 Toyota HiLux TRD.
In addition to TGR, Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus – which launched in Australia in 1990 – is another global brand pillar of the world’s largest carmaker, alongside Daihatsu (which no longer has a presence here) and Century, which is being considered for local launch.
