Google is finally bringing one of its best AI-powered Google Translate features to iPhone users. Live Translate with Headphones is now rolling out to iOS, months after debuting on Android in December.
The feature turns your headphones into a real-time translator, helping you understand conversations as they happen without having to stare at your phone.
According to Google, the live translation feature works in more than 70 languages and is expanding to additional regions including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand and the United Kingdom
How Google turns your headphones into a live translator
Live translation works directly via the Google Translate app. As soon as you connect your headphones, the app listens to the spoken language and delivers a translated version to your ears.
The experience goes beyond word-for-word translation. According to Google, tone and rhythm are preserved, allowing you to better understand the nuances of what is being said.
This builds on Google’s broader push with Gemini-powered translation, which focuses on understanding meaning and nuance rather than literal phrases. This means that slang, expressions and more natural language patterns can be processed more effectively.
Bring real-time translation to everyday conversations
The function is designed for everyday use. You can use it to monitor conversations with family members or friends who speak a different language. It can also help you understand announcements while traveling or get local recommendations without missing the context.
Getting started is pretty easy. Download and open the Translator app, tap Live Translation, and plug in your headphones. From there, the app handles the rest of the translation in real time.
Google is expanding Translate in other ways, too, from allowing you to choose between faster or more accurate translations to testing a pronunciation trainer to help you correct your accent.
