Claude can now complete tasks on your PC independently without the need for cumbersome OpenClaw setup

OpenClaw took the world by storm when it launched, demonstrating that a true personal assistant capable of executing complex commands on a computer is possible.

Despite its success, OpenClaw is not for everyone. It is difficult to set up and has several security concerns, making it useful for tech-savvy people. A better solution for the average consumer is Claude Cowork, which Anthropic recently launched.

It can perform tasks on your computer like OpenClaw, requires no technical setup, and is secure. The feature is now available as a research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers on macOS and Windows computers.

How does it actually work?

Claude Cowork can open files, surf the web, click through apps, and run developer tools, all without complicated setup. Once you give it access to your files and issue the command, you’re good to go.

Claude is smart enough to reach for the best tool first. If a connector is available for something like Gmail, Google Drive, or Slack, that will be used. When there’s no port, Claude takes over and controls your browser, mouse and keyboard to get the job done. It always asks for permission before accessing a new app or file, and you can stop it at any time.

For example, I can ask Claude Cowork to resize all the images in a specific folder, rename files, or search the Internet for a list of the best ice cream shops in your area, all without me having to do anything.

Can you control it from your phone?

Yes, and this is where things get really exciting. Claude Dispatch, a recent release from Anthropic, is an app that allows you to send commands to the Claude desktop from your mobile phone.

Assign a task at the office and return home to find it completed. Cowork also has memory, so it maintains context across sessions and learns how you work over time.

For developers, Claude Channels adds another layer of utility. You can push events such as chat messages or monitoring alerts from platforms like Telegram or Discord directly into your Claude Code session.

You can also set up scheduled tasks. Ask Claude to summarize your emails every morning, create a weekly report, or follow industry news on a schedule. Claude does this automatically and sends a notification when the work is done.

What does this mean for you?

Claude Cowork bridges the gap between today and tomorrow, where a digital personal assistant can complete our tasks autonomously. While there are reasons to have reservations about AI, this is an exciting and useful direction.
