The long-rumored Google platform that combines Android and ChromeOS into one could be closer to being announced than previously expected. Aluminum OS has apparently been confirmed, with an official release possibly planned for fall 2026.
In a recent interview at MWC 2026, Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android ecosystem, revealed that the new operating system could launch this year. But this isn’t just any new operating system; It is a sign of the great changes to come.
Wait, what is Aluminum OS?
In short, Aluminum OS could be Google’s next big opportunity as a Windows competitor. Early reports and leaks suggest that it will be a fully Android-based desktop platform that will eventually completely replace ChromeOS. Instead of adopting ChromeOS’ browser-first approach, Aluminum OS has a few new tricks up its sleeve:
- Native Android app support
- Proper desktop-level multitasking
- Deeper AI integration via Gemini
- Seamless phone and ecosystem integration
All of this results in a unified platform from Google that spans phones, tablets and laptops.
Why is this a big deal to users?

When speaking about Aluminum OS, the CEO only revealed that he was “excited” for later this year. While this supports fall 2026 announcement expectations, it likely won’t be a full consumer launch. Google may start with early builds or limited releases, possibly for developers and partners. So a wider release could be years away, as ChromeOS is likely to coexist during this long transition period.
