An SUV model – known as MG4X – will soon join the MG 4 family, which currently includes the front-wheel drive MG 4 Urban and the more performance-focused MG 4.
Last week MG gave the world a look at the 4X’s exterior, now registration documents in China have revealed some key specs of the car.
Thanks to the documents viewed by Car news ChinaWe now know that the 4X is 4500mm long, 1849mm wide, 1621mm high and has a wheelbase of 2735mm.

Entry-level versions of the 4X are powered by a 125kW motor, while higher-end variants feature a 150kW electric motor. Given the 4X’s close relationship with the MG 4 Urban, it’s safe to assume that the 4X is a front-wheel drive-only vehicle, unlike the older MG 4, which is available in both rear- and all-wheel drive.
The battery capacity and therefore the range estimates are not yet known. The filing shows that initial models use batteries with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
Previous reports suggested the 4X would use the “world’s first” semi-solid battery, currently available in a variant of the MG 4 Urban sold in China. It is possible that this new battery type will be added to the 4X later as the battery supplier ramps up production of the new battery type.
The 4X rides on 18-inch wheels and has a curb weight of between 1640 kg and 1755 kg, depending on the trim level.
From official photos and documents, we can see that the design of the 4X follows the template of the MG 4 Urban, which has a rounder silhouette and softer details than the angular and aggressive MG 4.
Up front, the 4X features similar headlights to the Urban, but also features a new light bar connecting them and an illuminated MG emblem. At the rear, the 4X’s arrow-shaped taillights are inspired by the more angular MG 4.
Although there are no images of the interior yet, the 4X is said to have a cockpit designed in collaboration with smartphone manufacturer Oppo.
It’s likely the 4X will make its full debut at the Beijing auto show, which begins in late April.
