With new AI tools and law enforcement partnerships on its platforms, Meta is taking on the fight against fraudsters. The company is introducing new protections for Facebook and Messenger to make it harder for scammers to scam you.
New AI tools protect you from being scammed
The new features are designed to stop scams before you fall for them. Facebook will now display a warning if you send or receive a friend request from an account that appears suspicious, such as: B. Accounts without mutual friends or mismatched location information.
The messenger is also getting an upgrade. The fraud detection feature is expanding to more countries and is more powerful than before. If you see suspicious red flags like unsolicited job offers in a conversation with a new contact, Messenger flags it and asks if you want an AI review of the chat. If fraud is discovered, you’ll receive more information about what to look out for, as well as options to suspend or report the account.
On the advertising side, Meta is expanding its advertiser verification program, with the goal of having verified advertisers generate 90% of advertising revenue by the end of 2026, up from 70% currently. This makes it much more difficult for fraudsters to place fraudulent ads on a large scale.
Meta also goes after scammers at the source
Beyond the new tools, Meta has worked with law enforcement to disrupt fraud operations worldwide. In a joint disruption operation with the FBI, the Department of Justice and the Royal Thai Police, meta-investigators suspended over 150,000 accounts linked to fraud centers and contributed to 21 arrests.
Meta also removed over 159 million scam ads last year, with 92% removed before anyone even reported them. The company also removed 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram that were linked to criminal fraud hubs.
What it means to you
With generative AI making fraud attempts more convincing than ever, building an additional layer of protection into apps used by billions of people is a real win. While these tools won’t catch everything, they will significantly reduce the chances of you being targeted on Facebook and Messenger.
