The fourth generation of the Nissan Elgrandthe car that arguably created the luxury people carrier segment was unveiled at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show.
Essentially a toned-down version of the 2023 Hyper Tourer concept. The new Elgrand’s timeless Japanese futurism style has plenty of sharp edges and interesting angles that catch the eye, and is certainly a more intriguing design than the third-generation model that launched back in 2010.
The front end is dominated by a pixel lighting arrangement that blends into the grille pattern. The car shown here is painted in the “Fuji Dawn” livery, which is intended to combine the colors of the sunrise on Mount Fuji with a deep red-purple tone that symbolizes nobility.
Inside we find a minimalist dashboard, heavily influenced by the Ariya mid-size electric SUV, with a screen console with two 14.3-inch displays.
While the climate control system has capacitive buttons under the infotainment screen, there is a physical volume control and on/off switch for the sound system. Likewise, the transmission buttons and spoke controls on the steering wheel all use physical buttons.
With its mix of interesting colors, kumiko-inspired patterns on the door panels and seat fabrics, and subtle wood grain elements, the interior is a big improvement over the functional interiors of today’s cars. The only inconsistency is the center headrest of the rear seats, which does not match the color of all the other seats.
A 22-speaker Bose sound system and a 64-color ambient lighting system are among the items on Elgrand’s options list. The People Mover is also available with the latest ProPilot system, which enables hands-free driving below 50 km/h, as well as hands-free operation on highways and hands-free lane changing.
The current vehicle’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engines were given preference. They have been replaced by a third-generation e-Power hybrid system, in which a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine acts as a generator for electric motors that drive the wheels.
While performance has not yet been revealed, Nissan says the Elgrand is the first car to feature the next-generation e-4orce all-wheel drive system, which uses torque from the rear axle motor to counteract pitching during acceleration and deceleration.
Given history, it seems unlikely that the Elgrand will find its way down under, but there is a healthy market for the Elgrand and its competitors on the gray market.
While Toyota has so far resisted the urge to officially bring the Alphard/Vellfire twins to Australia, the very closely related Lexus LM has gone on sale locally in 2023.
