The MG 4 EV Urban The new electric hatchback has been confirmed to arrive in Australia in April 2026, taking on a growing number of budget electric vehicles (EVs).
In contrast to the existing MG 4, which offers a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, the MG 4 Urban is offered exclusively as a single-engine electric vehicle with front-wheel drive.
It will be offered with a choice of 43 kWh or 54 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, but pricing and specifications have yet to be announced.

The company previously confirmed that the MG 4 EV Urban would sit alongside an updated version of the existing MG 4, which would lose its 51kWh and 77kWh batteries and only offer a 64kWh package.
The MG 4 has received a revised interior in overseas markets, recently revealed for the right-hand drive UK market. We’ve contacted MG Motor Australia to confirm when the updated MG 4 will be available here.
In the UK market, the new MG 4 EV Urban is priced at £6,500 (A$12,400) less than the updated MG 4. The existing MG 4 range starts at $37,990 before on-road costs in Australia, although current deals put even drive-to-car prices below that amount.
We expect the MG 4 EV Urban to be priced much closer to $30,000 than $40,000. However, it is unclear at this stage whether it will slip below the $30,000 mark like the BYD Dolphin Essential ($29,990 before on-road costs).
While detailed specifications are not yet available for Australia, the MG 4 EV Urban is already available in right-hand drive in the UK market.
The MG 4 EV Urban rides on the Chinese automaker’s new E3 platform and features a torsion beam rear suspension instead of an independent multi-link suspension like the MG 4.
It is 4395 mm long, 1842 mm wide, 1551 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2750 mm. This makes it 108 mm longer, 6 mm wider and up to 47 mm higher than the existing MG 4, with a 45 mm longer wheelbase.
The trunk volume is 568-577 liters measured up to the roof, expanding to 1,364 liters with the rear seats folded down.
The electric hatch produces between 110kW and 118kW through the front-mounted motor as well as 250Nm of torque. This results in an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, depending on the variant, between 9.5 and 9.6 seconds.
On a 150 kW DC fast charger, it should take 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent. The MG 4 EV Urban also supports 11 kW AC charging.
The WLTP range is 325 km with the smaller battery and between 405 km and 416 km with the larger battery.
Inside, at least in the UK market, the MG 4 EV Urban features a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster.
Standard equipment in the UK includes automatic LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch available), a heat pump, automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation and a range of active safety and driver assistance technologies.
These include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot monitoring, driver monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, safe exit warning and traffic jam assist.
Available features include ambient lighting, heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a wireless phone charger and a surround-view camera with transparent chassis mode.
“With the cost of living remaining at the forefront and petrol prices continuing to fluctuate faster than motorists can read the sign, the all-electric MG 4 EV Urban offers greater cost certainty and freedom from fuel price fluctuations,” MG Motor Australia said in its press release today.
In the small electric hatchback segment, the MG 4 has competed with two other affordable Chinese models: the BYD Dolphin and the GWM Ora.
The GAC Aion UT is scheduled to appear here in the second quarter of 2026, ahead of the Geely EX2 in the second half of 2026; Chery is also expected to join the fray.
The price that MG, Geely and GAC have to beat is that of the BYD Atto 1, which will be launched at the end of 2025. It’s significantly smaller than all other affordable electric hatches and costs from just $23,990 (excluding on-road costs). However, it’s unclear whether any of these larger models will have a price quite as low as the BYD.
