Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones could detect dirt before it damages the screen

With February’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event just a day away, leaks are flowing like an untamed river. An early version of One UI 9 has all but confirmed the addition of a new design to the Samsung Galaxy Fold range.

The Galaxy Fold and Flip are joined by a new, wider Galaxy Fold that features a passport-style design, giving users a better tablet experience when the device is unfolded.

Now the folks at Android Authority have discovered a new feature in One UI 9 code builds. This feature, called foreign material detection, is intended to prevent users from damaging their Fold’s screen.

What is the foreign material detection function?

One of the biggest causes of damage to the inner display of foldable devices is small dirt particles that get stuck between the two halves of the screen.

The strings found in the code indicate that the wide Samsung Galaxy Fold is now warning you to look for foreign objects that could prevent the screen from fully closing. Instead of forcing the device to fold, which could damage the display, this prompt allows users to clean the device before closing it.

Samsung has added three new images to demonstrate the feature. As shown in the images, a wider foldable device appears alongside the standard Galaxy Fold and Flip models, confirming the introduction of a new form factor.

What other surprises is Samsung cooking up for the Galaxy Unpacked event?

We’ve seen several leaks and rumors revealing more features and hardware changes for Samsung Galaxy Ultra and Fold devices.

There’s a new privacy feature that prevents people from spying on private information, new screen technology that significantly reduces the crease on foldable devices, and several new AI features.

If the leaks and rumors prove to be correct, Samsung fans can expect an extraordinary event.
