Google Search can now answer questions using your Gmail account and photos in AI mode

Google has announced that AI Mode in Search can now access your Gmail and Google Photos to deliver answers that feel personal, relevant and based on your real life. This update brings what Google calls “personal intelligence” directly into search, moving it beyond general results into something closer to a digital memory that works for you.

Until now, the AI mode has focused on answering complex questions through conversation. With the addition of Personal Intelligence, details can now be silently linked across your Google apps so you don’t have to explain everything from scratch. According to Google, this helps search understand your preferences, plans and habits rather than relying on keywords or manual settings.

How Personal Intelligence is changing everyday search

When AI mode is enabled, Search can look for things like hotel bookings in Gmail or previous travel photos to shape their responses. For example, if you’re planning a family vacation and asking about things to do, the AI mode can take into account where you are and what experiences frequently appear in your photos. Google even shared an example where frequent ice cream selfies could lead to recommendations for ice cream shops.

Shopping searches also receive more context. If you ask for help buying clothes for a trip, AI Mode can use flight emails to consider where you’re flying, what the weather is usually like, and what brands you’ve already purchased. Google likens it to having a personal shopper who already knows your itinerary and style.

This feature is optional and can be disabled at any time. According to Google, AI Mode doesn’t train directly on your email or photo library. Instead, limited information from specific prompts and responses is used. Personal Intelligence is currently rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US.

With the latest update, Google is transforming search into a tool that understands not only what you’re asking, but why you’re asking it, based on the life you already lead in the Google ecosystem.
