Now that I’ve completed the majority of the wall design in the studio bathroom, I think the rest of this project will go pretty quickly and smoothly. Since I don’t have time for actual work on Wednesdays, I took some time last night to assess where I am on this project and make a list of what still needs to be done to complete it. I think the majority of these things on my to-do list can be done by the end of the weekend.
One of the most obvious things I still need to finish is the wainscoting. Luckily, most of it is already painted and just needs dusting and cleaning. But I still need to seal, prime, and paint the new trim I installed in the room. I also need to figure out how to finish the outlet. I have a plan, so I hope it works.
And then the whole fourth wall still needs to be completed. I was able to add the strips to the top and middle rows of this part of the wall, although I still need to finish a few strips.
But I had some problems in the bottom row. For some reason the primer in this area formed some bubble-like areas that were not smooth (which would have shown when painted) and peeled off very easily. I have no idea what would have caused that. I’ve never had this done with primer before. So I peeled off the loose parts, and now I have to fix them before I can finish the strips. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it should be an easy fix. And then my light switches need a switch plate. I’m still undecided about the switch plate. Should I just use white or use a paintable switch plate and match it to the wall design? I’ll probably do the latter.
But this area of the wall will be my biggest challenge. There is simply no way to remove this wallpaper from the walls without it stripping not only the primer underneath, but also some of the drywall mud I applied to even out the unevenness on this wall. *Sigh* It’s so frustrating that I have to start over with drywall mud as soon as I peel this wallpaper off. And since I wrapped the wallpaper a few inches around the corner, the whole corner is a mess and needs some attention before I can finish the stripes all the way to the corner.
I also need to figure out the lighting situation. Since it’s such a small bathroom, you can see how close the two lights are to each other.
This is also the ceiling light that I bought to replace the very plain round light. This light is 12 inches tall.
And then I had planned to just spray paint the sconce I already have gold and put it back on.
But since the two lamps are so close together, I don’t know what I would want from such a large, eye-catching lamp over the mirror to compete with my cute floral lamp on the ceiling. That’s why I’m now thinking about buying a slimmer wall light. I imagine something like this (affiliate link)…
I don’t know if you can imagine it, but I think the simpler design of this wall lamp fits much better with the ceiling lamp I chose.
I’m still undecided about painting the ceiling. Right now I’m leaning towards leaving it white because I just like how the stripes look with the white on top and the white (panelling) on the bottom. I like the idea of keeping all the color in this area, almost like a frame on a painting. Or maybe I’ll decide to paint it pink at the last minute.
But this decision also depends on how the vanity looks when I have it painted. I’m still in the “green” camp when it comes to the vanity, but it definitely won’t be the green I tested. This green is far too muted to support this colorful wall design.
In addition to all of these things, I must:
- Hang up the mirror,
- Attach the apron trim to the window and have it caulked and painted.
- Clean the floor and touch up the paint if necessary,
- Install the new faucet and
- Replace the knobs and handles on the vanity.
- Purchase and install a new toilet paper holder and towel ring and
- Make or purchase a piece of art for the wall above the toilet.
I’m always amazed at how much work goes into tiny spaces. It doesn’t matter how small the room is, it still requires just as many basic steps as a larger room. Luckily, because the space is tiny, it takes less time to complete each step than it would in a much larger bathroom. So I think I can cross a lot of these things off the list over the next four days, and then hopefully I can finish this bathroom next week. We’ll see how it goes!
