The quick version:
-
The May 2026 core update caused a lot of volatility as almost 80 percent of the top results changed.
-
It hit aggregators and boosted brands, official sources and data-rich sites.
-
A core update is a reevaluation, not a penalty.
The pattern
Google rewards sites that add value compared to sites that repackage what already exists. If your content is a reworded version of the same sources that everyone cites, you’ve lost exactly that ground. Original data and first-hand experiences collected or accumulated.
No panic
If you dropped, it doesn’t automatically mean you broke a rule. This usually means that another result now seems more helpful or more clearly linked to real expertise than yours.
The recovery step
This is a calibration, not a hectic technical audit. Look at the pages that have fallen and ask if each one has a reason for being beyond a keyword. I’ve watched bloggers on Strengthen the depth, reduce the thin pages, and the rankings usually follow suit on the next update.
