I haven’t been a big fan of Sydney Sweeney until now! That’s because I saw an early screening of Christy And I will say that Sweeney delivers a stunning performance as Christy in the boxing biopic.
About Sydney Sweeney’s role in the film Christy
Christy is a biographical sports drama about former professional boxer Christy Martin. In the lead role, Sweeney tells of Martin’s rise to become America’s most famous boxer in the 1990s. There’s a lot more to the story, but if you’re like me and don’t know its story, I recommend going into this film blind. I had no idea how the movie would end and I feel like this made the story much better.
The film first premiered at the Toronto Film Fest, but I saw the flick at the Austin Film Fest with Christy Salters (formerly Martin) in attendance (she now lives in Austin, Texas). When asked what it was like to see her life on screen, the West Virginia native said, “I’m literally a miner’s daughter from a small town of about 700 people. We don’t even have a stop sign, let alone a traffic light. So to see my life up here is just overwhelming.”
Salters further explained what it’s like having Sweeney portray her. “And then the It girl Sydney Sweeney plays me. That’s pretty crazy,” Martin exclaimed.
Personally, I think this is Sweeney’s best work to date. I love it when we see a young person make great progress at the beginning of their career. This “it girl” is making great progress and it’s paying off. It’s likely she’ll be nominated for a Golden Globe – and perhaps an Oscar – this coming awards season.
Although Sweeney did not attend the Austin Film Fest, she did appear there SCAD Savannah Film Festival Just a few days later, she received the Spotlight Award for her work on the film.
You can see Christy in cinemas from November 7, 2025.
