New Delhi: Boxing World Cup final silver medalist Jadumani Singh showed a mix of aggression and technical superiority to defeat his international compatriot and SSCB teammate Pawan Bartwal and secure his maiden senior national title in the men’s 50-55kg category as SSCB bagged 12 gold medals with easy victories at the Men’s and Women’s Elite National Boxing Championships at Gautam Buddha University, Greater on Saturday Noida, topped the overall standings.
This was the first time that the men’s and women’s national championships were held simultaneously at the same venue and featured 600 boxers from across the country competing in 10 men’s and women’s weight classes each.
SSCB won nine of them in the men’s category and three in the women’s category.
While many of the country’s star boxers were in action on the final day of competition, all eyes were on the clash between Jadumani and Pawan as both had won medals on the international stage last year. But on Saturday, Pawan was no match for Jadumani’s cunning as the latter won 5-0 and secured the gold medal.
A few minutes later, SSCB’s Aditya Pratap (men’s 60-65kg) edged Himachal’s Abhinash Jamwal 3-2, while Ankush (men’s 75-80kg) defeated Malsawmtluanga to secure their first senior national title.
In the women’s category, Preeti (51-54kg) and Pranjal Yadav (60-65kg) of SSCB and Priya (57-60kg) and Alfiyan Khan (80+kg) of Railway bagged their first senior national gold medals. Meanwhile, world champion Minakshi cemented her supremacy in the women’s 45-48kg weight category with a 5-0 win over RSPB’s Manju Rani, while Telangana’s two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen defeated Haryana’s Nitu by an identical margin in the women’s 48-51kg final.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 70-75kg) defeated Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom of Railways to win the gold medal.
