It’s getting there! (One more day needed)

I almost didn’t post anything today because I’m still here working on the same project – the bathroom walls – and I know that’s getting boring for some of you. I knew I couldn’t finish them all yesterday so I decided to finish the first round and then I’ll finish the rest today.

But I decided to show you the progress anyway because after I removed all of the painter’s tape on this first round of paint in this row last night, I was amazed at the difference between the rows without white and the row with white.

If you remember, I was actually thinking about doing a design with white lines separating all the colors like that.

Here is a look at the model I made using this design.

Of course there is a big difference between a model and the original. I also changed the order of colors for the actual walls to keep similar colors together. And if I had chosen this design, the white would have been much narrower than it looks on these walls. These white lines wouldn’t have been nearly as thick as these white stripes, but I think it would have had the same effect overall. And this effect is that the walls look really busy.

Keeping all the colors together and not adding white to them makes the overall look much softer. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I realize the walls are still colorful and busy and probably offer way too much color for many people. But the rows with no white are much more soothing to my eyes, while the row with the white is jarring to my eyes. Looking at it almost makes me dizzy.

Of course, if I had covered the entire height of the wall from the ceiling to the top of the wainscoting with solid color stripes, the addition of white wouldn’t have been quite as jarring. With the added paneling it would look more like the walls of my previous home gym.

Anyway, I just found this a very interesting observation and I wanted to share it with you for comparison in case any of you are considering a similar pattern for a project, be it a wall, a quilt or an art project. I definitely prefer the design without white, but I’m sure there are people who prefer white.

So I still have another day of painting to do before the main walls in this bathroom are finished. I hope to be here again tomorrow to show you the finished wall design including the new mirror!
