Let me show you the installation condition of our storage tank pool liner after 6 years of heavy use and harsh winters. As well as the updates and changes we’ve made to keep it looking new.
I mentioned in my last blog post that I was dreading tackling this project update, but in the end the process wasn’t as bad as we thought. Well…it was a lot of work, but knowing that we’ll be using it daily in the summer was definitely the carrot we had in mind to get it done right away and not complain about the work.

Before I dealt with completely removing the liner, I of course did some research again. This is always the most important thing before starting any DIY project. And as I mention in my video, when we did this project in 2019, there was no information about pool liners for stock tank pools. I read on Reddit now that there were people who had done this before, but in 2019 I couldn’t find any real information about it. While there were blog posts about stock tank basins, there were no DIY projects about installing liners.
I consider us the internet pioneers in pool liner installation and all blog posts now are based on what we posted. Now, six years later, many people have installed a liner in their storage tank basins and I have looked at some of those projects as well.

Step 3: Attach a pool liner to the bottom of the storage tank
Because we have had problems with small holes in the bottom of the stock tank pool over the years, I decided to install a pool liner this time. It’s like a felt pad or foam pad.
My only concern is that if it gets between the liner and the tank, I’ll have to vacuum the water again, like we did every spring. The padding could potentially complicate this process. We had to patch several holes every spring.
I used a 12′ round pool liner pad. I simply placed it on the bottom of the tank, traced the outline of the tank’s diameter with a Sharpie, and then used sharp scissors to cut off the padding.
I then used Gorilla Glue Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive to attach the liner pad to the stock tank basin. I think this step is really necessary considering that water could get between the liner and the tank again, causing it to bulge and wrinkle, which would be a disaster.
Step 4: Adding the new pool liner and installing the inlet and outlet valves
Now all we had to do was follow the same process as we originally did for installing the pool liner. I cut the holes in the liner in the same location and then applied silicone sealant to the inlet and outlet valve parts after screwing them into place. It was like putting a metal trash bag in a trash can all over again. No joke!
This time I did a much better job of avoiding wrinkles. Check out my original swimming pool tank post to see how I cut the holes in the tank.
Step 5: Fill the pool and check for leaks
My husband removed all the rocks and gravel so we could install the liner on the outside surface of the pool. We also removed the old bamboo fence. We then filled the pool and checked the inlet and outlet valves for leaks.
Afterwards we added the new bamboo fence and put all the stones back in place. Voila, it looks like new.
As a reminder, the photo below shows what the pool looked like in 2019 when we originally installed it.

We are so happy that our pool is back up and running and looking like new. Now all we have to do is attach a bamboo protector to the pool surround.
Oh, and how about my Frank in the video? He loves having us outside in the garden again. He’s also happy that his roommate, aka my son, can cuddle with him in bed every night again.
Bye,
