Instagram just changed its algorithm and bloggers using the platform for traffic need to read this

Instagram made two changes in May and June 2026 that directly impact bloggers who use the platform to drive traffic to their websites. Both are live right now.

Change one: original content or no recommendations

Instagram expanded its original content protection to photos and carousels on April 30, 2026. Accounts that primarily repost content they did not create will no longer be recommended to non-followers in the Explore, Feed, and Discover sections. The platform evaluates accounts on a rolling 30-day basis.

Original Content means photos you have personally taken, videos you have recorded, graphics you have created, or third-party content that has been significantly modified through genuine commentary, creative editing, or educational insertions. Adding a border, watermark, or simple caption is not allowed.

For bloggers who have shared graphics, quote cards, or reposted industry content on Instagram as a sales strategy, this policy change is already impacting your discovery reach. If most of what you posted in the last 30 days was not original, your account is probably currently outside the referral zone.

Change two: Users now control their own feed

Instagram has launched the “Your Algorithm” feature for all English-speaking users, allowing them to manually set their interests for Reels and prioritize three top topics. For YouTubers, this means being even more specific to their niche so that they end up directly in the curated feeds of their target audience.

This is the most interesting development for bloggers building an Instagram audience. When your followers manually add your niche to their top three interests, your content gets priority over everything else in their feed. This is a fundamentally different integration option than the old algorithm-based model.

This week’s action is to post a story or reel explaining your algorithm to your followers and specifically identifying your niche category so they know exactly what to add to their interest list. This is currently one of the most direct ways to increase organic reach on Instagram without spending on advertising.

Reddit’s r/Blogging at https://www.reddit.com/r/blogging/ has a thread on Instagram as a traffic source for bloggers in 2026. The conversation has clearly shifted towards original content creation and community building, rather than content aggregation as a viable long-term strategy.

X at https://x.com/search?q=Instagram+algorithm+update+bloggers+2026 Content creators share their reach data before and after both changes. The pattern is clear: original content creators are seeing stable or increasing reach, while aggregation accounts are declining sharply.

Quora on https://www.quora.com/How-do-Instagram-2026-algorithm-changes-affect-bloggers has responses from bloggers who have tested both the original content policy and the Your Algorithm feature, sharing concrete reach data from their own accounts.
