Google’s May (year) core update is in the middle of rolling out – which is what every blogger needs to do before it’s ready

If you run a blog and haven’t checked your Google Search Console traffic data in the last four days, open it now. The May 2026 Core Update began rolling out on May 21st and is still in progress today. This is one of the most significant algorithmic events of the year so far, and what you do – and more importantly, what you don’t do – over the next week will matter.

What Google is actually looking for this time

This update is about tailoring content to the real need behind each search query, not just the keywords on the page. Context has replaced keyword density as the primary ranking signal. Google no longer just ranks pages that contain the right words, but also ranks how well the content meets the actual intent behind a search. This is a significant shift for bloggers. Writing an article that perfectly targets your keyword but doesn’t fully address the reader’s actual needs will hurt you more than it used to. The solution is not technical. It’s editorial. Go back to your most important posts and honestly ask yourself: If someone searched for this keyword and landed on my page, would they leave with a real answer to the question? If the answer is no, then this is the problem you need to solve.

The quick audit every blogger should do this week

Don’t panic about deleting pages. Don’t rewrite your entire website based on fluctuating data over three days. The rankings will continue to change throughout the launch period. The right approach is to identify the top five traffic pages and check whether they have clear author attribution, updated publication date, original analysis or first-hand experience, and a complete and specific answer to the primary search query the page is targeting. Fix these first. Everything else can wait until the rollout is confirmed complete. The bloggers who remain calm and methodical during a core update almost always do better than those who make reactive changes based on incomplete data during the rollout.
