Google recreated the search box for the first time in 25 years – here’s what it means for SEO

The biggest change to Google’s search interface since 2001

In addition to the core update, Google announced the biggest upgrade to its search box in over 25 years at I/O this week. The new interface is based on Gemini 3.5 Flash – now the default model in AI mode worldwide – and fundamentally changes the way users interact with search. The search field now dynamically expands as users type, accommodating longer, conversational searches. It offers AI-powered suggestions that go far beyond traditional autocomplete, anticipating intent rather than just completing keywords. Users can now simultaneously search text, images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs as inputs. The old keyword-in-a-box search model – which shaped SEO strategy for two and a half decades – is being phased out in favor of a multimodal, conversational interface that’s more akin to talking to an assistant than running a query.

Why this changes keyword strategy more than any update in years

The SEO impact of this interface change is more significant than any single algorithm update. When users can describe problems conversationally, upload images, and drag in Chrome tabs for context, the nature of querying fundamentally changes. Short queries in keyword format are already on the decline as AI Overviews answers them without a click. The new search box accelerates this shift – it actively encourages users to fully describe their intent rather than condensing it into a keyword phrase. For SEO teams, this means that keyword research must aim to understand the full intent behind search queries rather than optimizing for the keyword itself. Content that fully answers a specific problem – the way a knowledgeable person would answer it in a conversation – will appear in the new search interface. Content that is written to fit a keyword sequence and doesn’t actually serve a user need will become increasingly unforgiving in the new interface.
