Artwork above the headboard? Yes or no?

Matt and I have been in our new bedroom for two days now. It was great to finally sleep in a real bedroom. But I also realized very quickly that having Matt in a room that I’m still working on and still having to take “progress photos” as I get things done really throws a wrench into my entire blogging process that I’ve gotten used to. Since I’m the one who signed up for this whole blog thing, and Matt hasn’t signed up for it or volunteered to appear in pictures on my blog, that means I only have a small window of time (about three hours a day from 10am to 1pm) to take all the pictures I want to take for my post the next day. I’m NOT used to that. I’m used to being able to take photos all day until I turn off the lights and go to bed.

Other than that, I have all the bedding (minus a comforter for the bed that I still want to make), and I was hoping to show that to you all today. In my humble opinion it looks SO GOOD and I was so excited to share this with you all. But I didn’t make it in that three hour window yesterday, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to share these updates with you.

So in the meantime, can you help me answer this question that’s been on my mind since I put the bed together two days ago. And this question is about artwork above the headboard. In general, I love artwork or something decorative over a headboard. It doesn’t have to be a framed print. In our last bedroom I used a large sunburst mirror over the bed and I absolutely loved it.

But of course this bedroom was completely different than our current one. The headboard itself wasn’t really noticeable and it was much lower, leaving more wall space above for the sunburst mirror. The bed linen was also rather plain. Instead of making the headboard and bedding the main feature of this room, the wall was the main feature and that allowed me to hang something decorative above the headboard.

Our new bedroom is completely different. In this room, the headboard and bedding (which I hope to take a photo of today) are the highlight. Not only is it covered with decorative fabric, but it is also much higher and arched. This makes it much harder to place anything over it, but I would still like to have something there…I find.

Ever since I installed the grasscloth wallpaper, I had been envisioning a set of three prints above the headboard. With this idea in mind, I even shared this picture with you a few months ago.

But now that the bed is in place, it’s hard for me to imagine it. There is only 27.5 inches between the top of the headboard and the trim, but I have an unwritten decorating rule that no artwork can be hung higher than the window or door trim, which limits the available space even more. So I found a random image online (definitely not the one I would use, but I wanted to find something with orange in it) and quickly made a mockup to see what that would look like. I don’t love it. Of course I could choose something with a smaller subject and more mat so it doesn’t require as much attention, but even then I’m not sure how I feel about the idea of hanging three pictures side by side over the arched headboard.

Of course a small square image looks ridiculous…

So if I’m taking a framed, matted picture, something rectangular in landscape format seems to fit best, but I’m not sure I like that. That seems way too high to hang a framed, matted picture. It almost seems strange to me to hang a picture so high on the wall.

So I think I’ve given up on the idea of hanging any kind of framed and matted artwork above the headboard, but I still really want to hang it something above the headboard. And I think I should also give up the idea of finding something square or rectangular. I think that when I hang something on the wall, it has to be a completely different shape. This got me thinking about possibly using a collection of small sunbeams that could be arranged around the arch of the headboard.

I just don’t know and I’m out of ideas other than this. Whatever I put there, I want to have more texture and not a print that makes people feel like they have to get closer to see it because it won’t be possible to get close. I would like something textured, shapely and perhaps a collection of something that can be hung around the arch of the headboard. So if you have any ideas other than a collection of small sunburst mirrors, I would love to hear your ideas!

In the meantime, I’ll do my best to take pictures of the bed made up with sheets and pillows while Matt is out of the bedroom today so I can show you all what it looks like tomorrow. I’m so excited that I’m on the home stretch with this bedroom!!
