If you use Android, Windows 11’s Resume feature might come in handy

Windows 11 has a continuity trick called the Windows 11 Resume feature that was mostly invisible. The idea is simple: do something on your Android phone, then your PC suggests where you can pick it up again.

This sounds a lot like the handoff flow between an iPhone and a Mac. But on Windows, the list of supported apps is so short that many people have never seen the feature beyond a few familiar names.

Microsoft is now signaling that Resume should work with more third-party Android apps, as long as there is a suitable app on Windows. When this happens at scale, Resume transforms from a buried switch into something you’ll actually notice.

More apps can join Resume

The most noticeable change is that Microsoft is describing a broader way for apps to make Resume shine. The basic requirement remains practical, the same service needs an Android app and a Windows app, otherwise there is nothing useful to forward to you.

It also seems less tied to a single companion path. In addition to the Link to Windows route, there is a second option that uses the Windows notification system to display a continuation suggestion via regular Windows notifications.

That doesn’t mean that suddenly everything will support this. Developers still need to integrate it, and access isn’t wide open by default.

It still won’t feel like Apple

Even with expanded support, Resume probably won’t immediately match Apple’s level of polish. Apple controls both platforms and much of the software experience, while Windows relies on app makers choosing to participate.

It is also not a complete session handover. You shouldn’t expect the exact same screen to appear on your PC that you left on your phone. Think of it as a quick shortcut back to the same app or service that beats browsing current apps, tabs, or notifications.

A curated approach could also be helpful. If the resume becomes a stream of low-value nudges, people will tune out and never look back.

What to watch next on your PC

If you want to check if Resume is doing anything for you, make sure it’s turned on in your app settings, then pay attention after using the same service on your phone. You’ll only see it when a supported Android app matches its Windows version.

The real test is which apps adopt it first. When everyday things like messages, emails, documents, and music come into the mix, CV becomes the kind of little feature you miss when it’s gone. If not, it remains a curiosity and you can ignore it without losing sleep.
