Some of us rang in the New Year with a champagne toast with loved ones or watched the fireworks. A man in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales opted for a high-speed police chase instead.
According to the NSW Police Force, Mid North Coast Highway Patrol officers were patrolling Plummers Lane in Rainbow Beach just after midnight when they spotted a Kia Rio traveling at 127km/h in an 80km/h zone.
When police signaled the 23-year-old male driver to stop, he allegedly failed to do so and instead led them on a chase reaching speeds of 150 km/h before reaching speeds of 170 km/h in a 100 km/h zone as officers ended the chase.

Down the road in Frederickton, officers put spikes on the road and the driver drove a short distance before allegedly stopping and fleeing the vehicle.
The man, who had a provisional P1 driving license, was arrested “a short distance away”, police said. A breath test returned a positive result and police said a later breath analysis at Kempsey police station showed a “high” reading of 0.190, while a drugs test returned a positive reading for cocaine.
He is accused of driving with a high alcohol concentration, driving with illegal drugs, dangerous driving, leading police on a chase and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h.
The man’s driver’s license was immediately seized and suspended and he was denied bail until January 15, 2026.
Maybe next year he should just stay home and watch the fireworks on TV.
