The defender arrives early for the 2026 Dakar Rally.
While the Defender makes its racing debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally, which is very soon approaching, a different kind of participation of the brand in the Dakar Rally began last year when Defender became the official vehicle partner of the race. In this role, race organizers have been provided with a fleet of six Defenders for route reconnaissance and are finalizing the route for the 2026 Dakar Rally.
The rally’s route spans thousands of kilometers, with racing taking place over 10 to 15 days through the remote areas of the Saudi Arabian desert. Based on the P300 variant of the Defender 110, the current Defender fleet has been modified to optimally handle the sandy conditions of the route planning task. These modifications include additional cargo, an additional fuel tank, a rally cooling package, a high-level air intake with cyclone intake pre-filter and more.
The Dakar Rally is about desert camping, and to that end the Defenders also have refrigerators, extra lighting and a 10.5-gallon water tank for showers. During the race, the vehicles are also used to “open” each stage. An additional fleet of defenders will be deployed to the race to transport officials and VIP media during the competition. With Defender also appearing as a manufacturer this year, the partnership with the 2026 Dakar Rally has evolved since its launch at the beginning of the year and is expected to last until 2028.
