Google will stop personal data leaks in 2025

Google announces the end of its popular program Dark Web Report Featured on December 15, 2025. The company is shutting down the tool that searched the dark web for leaked personal information such as emails, phone numbers and addresses. Launched in 2023 and expanded to all users in 2024, it alerted millions to potential identity risks from data breaches.

Google cites user feedback as the reason. Many found the alerts helpful, but lacked clear guidance on next steps, such as which accounts to secure. The company is shifting focus to more actionable security tools while continuing to protect against online threats, including dark web activity.

Timeline and Alternatives for Dark Web Report Users

Google is gradually phasing out the function. Users will receive emails informing them of the changes.

The most important dates include:

  • January 15, 2026: The search for new dark web violations ceases.
  • February 16, 2026: The feature will be phased out completely and Google will delete all associated data.

Users can delete their monitoring profile early if they wish:

  • Go to “Results About You.”
  • Select “Edit Monitoring Profile”.
  • Select “Delete Monitoring Profile.”

Google recommends these alternatives:

  • Security Check: Checks account security and resolves issues.
  • Google Password Manager: Generates and stores strong, unique passwords.
  • Password Audit: Notifications of compromised passwords.
  • Results about you: Finds and requests removal of personal information from searches.
  • Passkey and 2-Step Verification: Adds phishing-resistant protection.

The Dark Web Report provided visibility into leaks but often left users unsure how to fully respond. Google promises improved tools for the future.

Many use third-party options like Have I Been Pwned to receive violation notifications. This change highlights the need for practical data protection measures in the face of increasing breaches.
