The 2026 Jaecoo J5 has been confirmed for release in Australia with a choice of three powertrains – petrol, hybrid and electric – but the all-new small SUV will arrive here later than expected February next year.
Set to launch locally later this year, the J5 will join the Chinese car brand’s growing Australian model range below the existing Jaecoo J7 mid-size SUV in both size and price.
However, pricing and specifications are yet to be announced Omoda Jaecoo Australia Initial local details have been confirmed today, including three powertrain options, starting with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 108kW of power and 210Nm of torque, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Also available will be a 1.5-litre petrol-electric inline-parallel hybrid system and a battery-electric version with a WLTP range of 402km.
Like the larger, related J7, Jaecoo says the J5 will place an emphasis on “premium design, technology and safety” and bring “the same design language and outdoor-oriented approach to a new corner of the SUV segment.”
With the same upright silhouette, broad shoulders and signature waterfall grille as the J7, the five-seat J5 is 4380mm long, 1860mm wide and 1650mm high, with a 2620mm wheelbase. This makes it slightly shorter overall than the Chinese brand’s Omoda 5. But up to 50mm longer than the best-selling Hyundai Kona.
It also offers a load volume of 480 liters behind the 60/40 split rear seats, which frees up up to 1,284 liters of luggage space when folded flat.
Standard equipment confirmed by Omoda Jaecoo today includes a 13.2-inch portrait-mode infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a six-speaker audio system and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
“The J5 represents a significant step forward for Jaecoo in Australia, offering greater new energy choice and a more accessible path to premium motoring,” Omoda Jaecoo Australia Chief Commercial Officer Roy Munoz said.
“It brings together the design, quality and features that have made our J7 so popular in a more compact and affordable package. With the J5 we are offering Australians broader options without compromising on sophistication, practicality or performance.”
“Whether you’re traveling alone, with family or with four-legged passengers in tow, it’s designed with thoughtful features for every journey, complemented by advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. It delivers the modern premium SUV experience without taking up much space.”
By comparison, the J5 is already available in the UK in two trim levels – Pure and Luxury – and costs from £24,505 (before road costs), compared to £30,115 for the base J7, which costs $34,990 drive-away in Australia, suggesting a starting price for the J5 here of under $30,000.
The UK market J5 is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 108kW/275Nm and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.0 seconds.
Power is transmitted to the front wheels, but an all-wheel drive version is also available in other markets. It’s unclear if it will be offered locally.
The all-electric version of the J5 is sold in the UK as the Jaecoo E5. It features a front-mounted 152kW/288Nm electric motor powered by a 61.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering a WLTP range of 399km and DC fast charging up to 80kW.
In the UK, the base price is £3,000 higher than the equivalent petrol-powered model.
British models come with a 540-degree camera system and 19 ADAS functions as standard. Luxury models also feature heated and memory power front seats, wireless smartphone charging, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker Sony sound system.
As of the end of September, the Omoda Jaecoo brand – which offers the J7, J8 and Omoda 9 crossover SUVs – had delivered 2144 vehicles in Australia so far this year.
