Omoda Jacobo follows its sister brand Chery in launching an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.
After launching the Jaecoo J7 petrol and plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV here last year, Omoda Jaecoo is now launching the smaller one Jaecoo J5. It is scheduled to be available in local showrooms in January 2026.
The market launch of the new nameplate will be launched with a fully electric version, with petrol and hybrid drives to follow in March.

Omoda Jaecoo Australia says the J5 EV will be launched in a single, well-specified model grade that “comes standard with a wide range of features that will appeal to Australian buyers, particularly those with a fur baby.”
The company has not yet announced pricing for this variant.
The J5 EV features a single front-mounted electric motor that produces 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque, equating to 0-100km/h acceleration in 7.7 seconds. It is powered by a 61.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
Omoda Jaecoo claims an electric range of 402 km in the WLTP cycle and an energy consumption of 14.3 kWh/100 km. A 30-80 percent charge on a DC fast charger reportedly takes 28 minutes.
The J5 EV is designed to tow up to 750kg with an unbraked trailer.
We are not sure why Omoda Jaecoo chose the model name “Track” for the J5 EV. Although it is comparable to other Omoda Jaecoo products, it is not designed for off-road trails (it is a front-wheel drive) or race track (it is a small electric SUV).
Standard equipment includes:
- 18-inch aero alloy wheels with Continental tires
- Electric tailgate
- Projector LED headlights
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality
- Fixed glass roof with electric sun protection
- Remote start with climate storage
- Dual zone climate control
- Faux leather upholstery
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster
- 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Wired, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto
- 50W wireless phone charger
- 8 speaker sound system
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Emergency lane departure warning
- Surround view camera
- 7 airbags
Omoda Jaecoo points out that the faux leather upholstery used is pet-friendly and is made from a special silicone-based material that is said to be antibacterial and is both easier to clean and more durable than other upholstery.
Externally, the electric SUV differs from other Jaecoo J5s with a unique, closed radiator grille with active aerodynamics.
The J5 EV comes with an eight-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year unlimited mileage battery warranty, as well as eight years of capped price service.
With a similar silhouette to the J7, the five-seat J5 is 4380mm long, 1860mm wide and 1650mm high, with a wheelbase of 2620mm. This makes it slightly shorter overall than Chery’s own C5/E5 duo, but up to 50mm longer than the best-selling Hyundai Kona.
Omoda Jaecoo had previously promised the J5 would launch here in February 2026, with the lineup also including a 108kW/210Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a continuously variable transmission, as well as a 1.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid.
“The BEV variant will be a compelling choice in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle market,” said Omoda Jaecoo Australia Chief Commercial Officer Roy Muñoz.
“No other vehicle currently offers a pet-friendly interior and a wide range of accessories, ranging from a dog carrier to a waterproof cargo mat to a karaoke machine.”
The J5 will be the fourth model from Omoda Jaecoo in Australia, following the Jaecoo J7 and J8 and the Omoda 9. Also in 2026, the mid-sized Omoda 7 will hit Australian showrooms.
By the end of November, Omoda Jaecoo had delivered 3224 vehicles in Australia, more than Jeep (1521) and Peugeot (1249).
