Another new MG has been leaked by safety regulator Euro NCAP, this time a new large plug-in hybrid SUV.
After releasing images of the MG S6 EV mid-size SUV ahead of its official unveiling, Euro NCAP has now done the same for the MG S9 PHEV – a plug-in hybrid version of the QS that is already on sale in Australia.
The Euro NCAP safety report also notes that the PHEV SUV has a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive. Unlike the PHEV versions of competitor Skoda Kodiaq, it also has a third row of seats.

These powertrain details suggest the QS could adopt the setup from the smaller HS Super Hybrid, which combines a 105kW/230Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a 154kW/340Nm electric motor for a total system output of 220kW and 350Nm.
The HS Super Hybrid uses a 24.7 kWh battery for an all-electric range of 120 km.
The Euro NCAP images do not reveal any cosmetic differences.
The arrival of a PHEV version of the QS wasn’t much of a surprise – except for those in Europe, where the rival Kia Sorento has never been offered – like Daily Sparkz As previously reported, MG had registered the trademarks for the QS PHEV and QS Plug-in Hybrid nameplates late last year.
Recently, in August 2025, MG also applied to IP Australia to protect the QS Super Hybrid nameplate.
Euro NCAP and ANCAP have both released safety ratings for the MG S9 PHEV and QS this week, with the plug-in hybrid and petrol SUVs both undergoing crash tests in Australia and Europe.
Overall, Euro NCAP awarded the MG S9 PHEV five stars, with a rating of 84 percent for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant protection, 74 percent for vulnerable road user protection and 77 percent for safety assistant.
Sister agency ANCAP gave the petrol QS a five-star rating, with slightly higher scores for each category: 88 percent, 86 percent, 76 percent and 80 percent, respectively. However, it was noted that installing child seats in the third row is not recommended as there are no anchor points for the top tethers.
MG launched the QS in Australia in mid-2025, marking the first time it had offered a three-row SUV locally.
The QS, a redesigned RX9 from SAIC Motors’ Roewe brand, has already recorded 777 deliveries in Australia this year, overtaking rival Nissan Pathfinder (636) and moving close to the Skoda Kodiaq (1035).
