Meet Australia’s most affordable electric vehicle (EV): the World Atto 1Priced from $23,990 before on-road costs.
The small electric hatchback is priced $6,000 less than BYD’s small Dolphin model, making it the cheapest electric vehicle on the market.
It also outperforms a number of popular petrol or hybrid city cars, including the Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris.
The Atto 1, known as the Seagull or Dolphin Surf in other markets, is BYD’s new entry-level model and will be available in Australian showrooms in December in two variants.

The Essential comes with a smaller 30kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a less powerful 65kW/175Nm electric motor, while the Premium upgrades to a larger 43.2kWh battery and a 115kW/220Nm electric motor.
The electric range according to WLTP is 220 km or 310 km.

According to BYD, a 0-100 percent AC charge takes 3.5 hours and a 10-80 percent DC fast charge takes 30 minutes.
The Atto 1 has a vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging function, so you can power small electrical devices from the battery.
Dimensions
The Atto 1 is available in a single five-door hatchback body style. Underneath, it rides on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, shared with models such as the new compact electric SUV Atto 2, and features MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam rear suspension.

Maintenance and warranty
BYD Australia has not announced service details for the Atto 1.
The company offers a six-year, 150,000 km warranty on its vehicles and a separate eight-year, 160,000 km battery warranty. For more information about BYD’s warranty offer, please visit the BYD website.
Security
The BYD Atto 1 has yet to be tested by safety agency ANCAP, but sister organization Euro NCAP awarded it five stars after testing in 2025.
It received an adult protection rating of 82 percent, a child protection rating of 86 percent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 76 percent and a safety assistance rating of 77 percent.
