The water is as calm and clear blue-green as you would hope for in the Mediterranean but don’t always get.

There are waterfront cafes for a long lunch, a marina for evening strolls, and enough independent restaurants and bars dotted throughout to keep you entertained even on a longer stay.

Where to stay: Barceló Ponent Beach
If waking up near the water is your thing (and why wouldn’t you be), then stay at Barceló Ponent Beach in Cala d’Or. This four-star hotel is right on Cala Ferrera Beach, meaning you can walk from the room to the sand in about the time it takes to find your flip-flops. This type of direct beach access is truly rare and makes a real difference to the holiday feeling, especially if you are traveling with family.
The hotel has around 417 rooms, many with terraces or balconies and a good selection with sea views. Multiple outdoor pools (including one overlooking the bay) provide options for even the busiest beach days. The restaurants offer Mediterranean and international cuisine and the bars are well equipped for everything from morning coffee to sundowners.
Personally, I always opt for all-inclusive when I can. There’s nothing worse than mentally tallying up the bill every time someone orders a round of drinks. It includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, making things a lot easier and freeing you up to focus on actual relaxation. For me, taking money completely off the table is half the battle when it comes to switching off properly.
What can you do nearby?
Cala d’Or rewards the curious. The marina The area is one of the most beautiful spots in the resort, especially in the early evening when the light is soft and there is a good atmosphere around the waterfront restaurants. It’s perfect for a slow walk before dinner.
The neighboring bays of Emerald Bay And Cala Gran Both are worth it. They’re just a short walk or bus ride away and tend to be significantly quieter than the main beaches, which is important in mid-summer. Pack a book, bring snacks and secure a spot early.
If you want to go out into the wide landscape, Mondrago Natural Park is one of the best natural places in the south of Mallorca. There are hiking trails through pine forests and bushland, hidden coves to explore, and a real sense of calm that feels worlds away from a busy resort beach. It’s a brilliant half day trip.
For something else, that Dragon Caves near Porto Cristo are spectacular. They are one of the largest underground cave systems in Europe and have an underground lake. It’s a reliable crowd-pleaser for all ages, but kids really love it here. And if you fancy a bit of culture, Palma is around an hour’s drive away and is absolutely worth the trip.
Tips for your stay
Go to the beach early. It sounds obvious, but the bays around Cala d’Or are small enough that they fill up quickly in July and August. Early morning is really nice – calmer water, softer light and lots more space in the sand.
Don’t get stuck in one place. The coastal path that connects the bays is one of the most beautiful things about this stretch of coast and it’s easy to explore several beaches in a single morning. Comfortable sandals and a bag with some water and sunscreen are enough.
If you arrive in high season, reserve your tables in the restaurant, especially at the marina places, in advance. They’re popular for a reason, and showing up on a busy night without a reservation is a gamble.
Rent a car, even just for a day or two. Cala d’Or is a good hiking spot, but with bikes you have many options – Mondragó, the Drach Caves, the ride along the east coast to Artà. Mallorca is a really beautiful island and it would be a shame to spend the whole week in a bay, as beautiful as it is.

Cala d’Or is one of those places that does exactly what it says on the tin – beautiful coves, clear water, a relaxed pace and just enough to keep you busy when you’re not lying horizontally on the sand. Combine that with a beachfront hotel like Barceló Ponent Beach and you’ll be well prepared for a proper unwind. Whether it’s a family vacation, a romantic getaway or a trip with friends, there’s little to complain about in this corner of Mallorca’s southeast coast.
