Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company’s upcoming Roadster sports car will be the brand’s last “manually powered” electric vehicle (EV) model as the company expands its autonomous vehicle lineup led by the Cybercab robot taxi.
During an earnings call in which the brand reported a 17 percent rise in net profit to US$422 million (A$590 million), Mr Musk said the second-generation Roadster – announced almost a decade ago – was nearing production.
At the same time, how Automotive News As reported, the CEO added further insight into the future of Tesla’s autonomous vehicle business.
“It will make sense for our entire product range to consist of different autonomous vehicles of different sizes,” Mr. Musk said on the call.
“In fact, in the long term, the new Tesla Roadster will be the only manually driven car.”

Tesla has been at the forefront of autonomous driving in the US – and often amid controversy over its safety – and its fully self-driving (supervised) system launched in Australia in September 2025.
The company also launched its robotaxi program with the unveiling of its Cybercab in 2024, a special butterfly-door taxi not designed to be operated by a human driver.
The Cybercab was designed for both fleet use and private ownership. The first robotaxi programs were conducted in Dallas and Houston and later expanded to San Francisco.
At the Cybercab announcement, Mr Musk said he hoped Full Self-Driving (FSD) would be extended to the Model Y and Model 3, essentially allowing owners to convert them into robotaxis.
On this week’s earnings call, the Tesla boss said an upcoming update to the FSD software would allow all vehicles using the Hardware 4 package, which has been standard since 2023, to drive autonomously.
However, beyond the promised roadster, Mr. Musk did not provide any details about future showroom models that will be added to the brand’s vehicle lineup.
However, he confirmed that the Cybercab is the affordable compact electric car that the brand had previously promised and that the company plans to ramp up production.
“Cybercab is the compact vehicle. It’s very spacious, but it’s a two-person vehicle,” Musk said on the call.
“We expect that in the long term the majority of our production will be cybercab, as 90 percent of the kilometers driven are driven by one or two people.”
Last year, Tesla updated its Model Y – the best-selling electric vehicle in Australia, the US, the UK and Norway in 2025. Tesla also updated its Model 3 sedan, which currently offers a range of up to 750 km.
The electric vehicle maker also recently announced the end of production of its Model S large sedan and Model large SUV
