The small SUV segment is becoming increasingly less interesting with the production of hot SUVs Volkswagen T-Roc R pack up.
Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) expects stock of the sporty compact SUV to be available in the first few months of next year.
An R version of the next-generation T-Roc has been confirmed, but it has yet to be finalized for an Australian launch.
The second-generation T-Roc was unveiled in August ahead of its expected European launch in 2026, but the hot R flagship has yet to be revealed ahead of its European launch in 2027.

VGA has not yet confirmed the launch date for a second generation T-Roc for our market.
Given the popularity of Volkswagen’s R models locally, we’d expect the new T-Roc R to be a real head turner.
It is noteworthy that the R series has shrunk after the Tiguan R was phased out and the new generation mid-range SUV is no longer offered in R version.
Volkswagen has not yet confirmed any details about the next-generation T-Roc R, although it could come with the Volkswagen Group’s most powerful 245kW/420Nm version of the Volkswagen Group’s EA888 2.0-litre ‘TSI’ turbocharged petrol engine.
If this is the case, it would be an increase in power and torque over the previous T-Roc R, which uses a version of the EA888 engine with 221kW and 400Nm.
It’s unclear whether the next T-Roc R will also feature the torque vectoring rear differential seen in the Golf R hot hatch.
The new T-Roc switches to the MQB Evo platform, which underlies the current Golf Mk8.
Although the silhouette is similar to the previous T-Roc, the new generation crossover SUV is 4373 mm long, 1828 mm wide and 1562 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2631 mm. That means it’s 122mm longer overall, 9mm wider and 9mm taller, and has a 28mm longer wheelbase.
In the redesigned, more spacious interior, the new T-Roc features a 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.4 or 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen with Volkswagen’s latest MIB4 system and anchored buttons for climate control.
By popular demand, there is once again a steering wheel with real buttons.
The new T-Roc launches in Europe with a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol powertrain, although a full hybrid system will follow later.
The range of small SUVs is crucial for Volkswagen. Not only is it the German automaker’s best seller in Europe, but it’s also the brand’s second best seller in Australia.
As of the end of September, Volkswagen has delivered 4,044 examples this year, trailing only the Amarok ute range with 4,354 deliveries.
