You’ll soon be able to turn off all Spotify videos in Music and Podcasts

Update (8:45 a.m. PT): Spotify now has officially launched Run the function worldwide and confirm that you can disable all video content for music and podcasts. The new controls will be added to Settings on mobile, desktop, web and TV. The company also allows Premium and Basic users of the Individual, Duo, Family and Student plans, as well as free users, to control how video content is displayed in the app.

If you find Spotify’s music videos annoying, you may soon be able to turn them off. Spotify is adding new video controls that allow you to disable all video content in the app. The update was shared by Rowland Manthorpe on X.

I just received an email: Spotify is introducing controls that will allow users to turn off videos for music or podcasts for both themselves and family plan members. I think deshitification theory says this is impossible? Or is it actually a secret conspiracy to degrade service?

How do I turn off videos for music and podcasts on Spotify?

The new controls are not yet available in my region. According to The Verge, the new controls for disabling videos in Spotify will appear in your Settings in the Content and Display section on mobile or in the Display section on desktop.

There are three separate switches you can work with. The first is an existing switch that disables Canvas Clips, which are short, looping, autoplay videos that play in the background while a track is playing.

The second will be a brand new toggle that specifically disables access to music videos. The third option, also new, disables all other video content on the platform, including podcast videos and vertical videos. Together, these three controls give you granular options to choose exactly how much video you want in your Spotify experience.

How do Spotify’s new video controls work for Family plan subscribers?

If you manage a Spotify Family plan, you can apply these video controls to each individual member of your subscription, similar to how managed account controls already work.

Once you turn off plan-level video for a specific member, that person will no longer be able to switch to the video version of a song or podcast themselves.

This essentially limits the experience to audio only for the person you select, which can be handy if you’re managing a plan that includes younger family members.

At the time of writing, Spotify has not made an official announcement about the new video controls. Availability may also vary by region and account. If you haven’t seen it yet, update your app and check your settings in the next few days.
