Cleetus McFarland adds more power and a sequential transmission to his 1,500 hp Toyota Supra “Rat Rod”.

The Rat Rod Supra returns to McFarland Racing.

While modern supercars and hypercars come with plenty of power from the factory, often putting out more than 1,000 horsepower, tuners and modifiers take pride in competing with expensive exotics in cars that cost a fraction of the price and are more than a decade older. The MKIV Toyota Supra is still a cult classic that fits the bill. It features a timeless design made famous by the Fast & Furious film series and an upgradeable 2JZ engine platform capable of producing more than 2,000 horsepower. If you’re a die-hard Cleetus McFarland fan like me, then you’re probably familiar with the “Rat Rod” Supra that the YouTuber added to his collection almost two years ago. And if you need a subtle reminder of Cleetus’ continued ownership of the JDM icon, the Supra spent much of its life on 2-speeds or taking fast rides with friends in the passenger seat. Since then, Cleetus’ Rat Rod Supra has received some subtle improvements from Induction Performance to replace its previous 1,300 horsepower setup with something special.

Delivered on a flatbed truck with the same sun-drenched and faded paint job since its first appearance on the canal, Cleetus and the team wasted no time in unloading the Supra to put it to the test. Beneath its unsuspecting appearance lies what can best be described as a dream build for anyone who dreams of owning a Toyota Supra. Its once standard 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which produced less than 300 horsepower, was bored out to 3.4 liters and equipped with a massive single turbo that now produces over 1,500 horsepower. But the real surprise comes when you open the door to a nearly flawless factory interior, where a massive sequential carbon shifter replaces the stock 6-speed gearbox. Add a gear indicator, anti-lag function and multiple power settings and you have an 8-second street car on your hands.

While the boys were entertained for the first few minutes with a complete breakdown of the build and some loud 2-stage checks in the parking lot, it only took a few moments for Cleetus and George to get the Supra on the road and test the sequential gearbox and ingenious rev matching that the Induction Performance team had achieved. And while we could sit here and talk about how blisteringly fast the new setup is, you’ll have to click below to see Cleetus McFarland going full throttle in his newly upgraded 1,500 horsepower Toyota Supra “Rat Rod” with Mr. Sam as his passenger.
