Apple is a leader in a laptop category, but it’s not an accolade anyone wants to boast about. The MacBooks have taken the throne as the worst laptops in terms of repairability.
In the latest Failing the Fix report from the US PIRG Education Fund, these notebooks were ranked at the bottom. In the 2026 edition of the annual report, the group measured both major smartphone and laptop brands on the repairability of their products.
What do the rankings reveal?
The report used European repair data and additional adjustments related to Right to Repair’s advocacy and support. In the laptop sector, PIRG rated ASUS with a B+, followed by Acer with a B. HP, Dell, Samsung and Microsoft were all tied with B-, while Lenovo received a C. Then there’s Apple, which came in last place with a C-.
Why is Apple at the bottom of the list?
PIRG is pretty direct about the result. The official summary says Apple is “finally” last among the laptop brands tracked in the scorecard, with no change in quality between 2025 and 2026. The group also adds that overall laptop repairability has remained stagnant this year, with only slight movement among major brands.
But that doesn’t mean Apple gets a pass.
PIRG uses laptop grades based on the French laptop repairability index. The evaluation takes into account factors such as the difficulty of disassembling a device, the availability of spare parts and repair documentation, tool and fastener requirements, and software support. Special emphasis is given to disassembly as this is the part of the repair that most closely reflects the real difficulties that consumers would face.
While the report found that Apple has made real progress when it comes to parts pairing in the smartphone space, MacBooks aren’t getting similar treatment, coming in last place for laptops this year.
