This nerdy NASA-inspired smartwatch has retro sci-fi charm and costs $129

If you’ve been following NASA’s latest lunar mission, you’ve probably seen headlines about everything from the floating iPhone in Artemis II to the advanced toilet system. And it seems wearable manufacturers are cashing in on the hype too, as CircuitMess has just announced a quirky gadget.

Meet the NASA Artemis Watch 2.0, a new smartwatch with a retro-futuristic look.

What’s so cool about that?

The NASA Artemis Watch 2.0 features a transparent rectangular case and the design is certainly the main attraction here. It has that chunky sci-fi gadget casing that looks more like a prop from an old-fashioned space adventure than a fancy mainstream wearable.

The Artemis Watch 2.0 has relatively modest hardware that uses an ESP32 microcontroller with Bluetooth support, allowing it to connect to Android phones and iPhones for incoming notifications. It also includes a gyroscope, accelerometer, temperature sensor and compass.

It doesn’t try to compete with premium wearables on the market, missing popular health features like a heart rate sensor or SpO2 tracking. So it won’t replace your Apple Watch.

Why software is the real star here

The special thing about the Artemis Watch 2.0 is its open source firmware. The wearable can customize software, create new watch faces and apps, access sensor data, and more. It has a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, making it feel less like a real smartwatch and more like a small wearable project device.

Price and availability

CircuitMess has just released the NASA Artemis Watch 2.0 for $129 on its official online store. The company even offers free shipping worldwide. It’s not the most advanced smartwatch on the market, even though its looks might suggest so, but for those who want something more playful and programmable, this is a solid nerd product.
