OpenAI is preparing to launch its first ChatGPT-based device, with an executive recently confirming it could launch later this year. Previous leaks suggested a wearable that sits behind the user’s ear and provides hands-free access to ChatGPT, but a new report now claims the company’s first product could instead be a speaker with a built-in camera.
According to The Information, the speaker could cost between $200 and $300 and be able to identify “objects on a nearby table or conversations people are having nearby.” The camera will also support biometric authentication, similar to Apple’s Face ID, so users can verify purchases.
The report adds that the speaker may not be the only hardware in development, pointing to the potential for ChatGPT-powered smart glasses and even a smart lamp. However, the introduction of data glasses is not expected before 2028. According to the report, the company has also developed prototypes of the smart lamp and other experimental devices, although there is currently no confirmation that any of these products will come to market.
No update on the previously leaked wearable
OpenAI’s hardware efforts are still in the early stages, the outlet notes. However, the report does not mention the previously leaked audio device. According to the description, this device, codenamed Sweetpea, is similar to wireless earbuds with a special design twist. Instead of sitting in the user’s ear, a leaked schematic suggests it would sit behind the ear, allowing ambient hands-free access to ChatGPT.
If the information proves correct, the speaker could arrive later this year, according to the schedule previously shared by OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane. More details are likely to emerge in the coming months as the expected launch window approaches.
