BMW is recalling more than 16,000 vehicles across nine of its model lines due to a manufacturing defect that poses a potential fire risk.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, increased wear on the starter motor solenoid may occur, which may result in an internal short circuit,” the company says in the recall notice.
“In this case, the driver may not be able to start the engine and, in the worst case scenario, overheating may result in a fire during vehicle operation.
“A vehicle fire or the driver’s inability to restart the engine could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and/or property damage.”

If you own an affected vehicle, you must make an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer to have the free repair carried out.
“Note: BMW recommends that you do not leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running and do not use the remote start function,” advises BMW.
“The short circuit could cause local overheating of the starter motor and the driver could see or smell smoke while driving or exiting the vehicle.”
