ChatGPT is down for a lot of users (Update: It’s back online)

Update: As of 1:17 PM PST, ChatGPT appears to be back online, generating replies and reading uploaded files.

The original report is as follows.

If you are having trouble accessing ChatGPT today, February 3, 2026, you are not alone. OpenAI’s flagship chatbot is currently experiencing issues marked as “increased error rates for ChatGPT users.”

Users began reporting the outage on Down Detector around 12:08 p.m. PST. At the time of writing, over 12,900 incidents have been reported on the platform, 99% of which are related to ChatGPT.

Over 13,000 service interruptions reported

OpenAI has identified the problem. “We have noticed that users are experiencing increased errors on the affected services,” the company writes on its official OpenAI status page. A solution is currently being implemented.

While OpenAI has been reporting the issue as ongoing for 10 minutes (at the time of writing), users on Down Detector have been reporting it for more than 30 minutes. Among APIs, ChatGPT and Sora, the chatbot currently has the lowest availability at 98.67%.

According to OpenAI, users may experience issues logging into their ChatGPT accounts, having conversations with the chatbot, uploading files, or using voice mode.

ChatGPT does not generate replies

I can confirm that the chatbot is currently not generating responses, although I have no issues logging into my account.

ChatGPT isn’t the only AI tool that’s had a tough time lately. Claude from Anthropic also had an outage a little over a week ago.

Hundreds of users saw the “This isn’t working right now” error message and some even experienced issues with the login pipeline during the downtime.

Aside from AI chatbots, TikTok also experienced lengthy service disruptions shortly after entering into its operating agreement in the US. Additionally, two days ago, X was down for a few hours, impacting thousands of users.

On the bright side for AI chatbots, OpenAI has just launched the ChatGPT Codex app for macOS. Additionally, Apple has announced that after the latest update, Anthropic and OpenAI models for agent coding will be available on the Xcode platform.
