Waze expands speed limit, toll booth and emergency vehicle alerts worldwide

It looks like Waze is finally ready to make good on some old promises. After a long silence, Google’s own navigation app has started sending out teaser emails confirming that a whole host of “new” driving features are coming to our screens. I say “new” with a bit of hesitation because if you’ve been following the news, you may remember that these exact features were announced back in early 2024. They’re supposed to be the next big thing, but aside from a few lucky testers, most of us have never seen them. Now, almost two years later, Waze says they will be rolling out “in the coming weeks.” Better late than never, right?

The core of this update is to give drivers an overview of the physical things that actually disrupt a ride. We finally get concrete warnings about speed limits, sharp curves and approaching toll booths. It sounds simple, but anyone who has ever encountered a hidden speed bump at 30 miles per hour knows how valuable this little symbol can be. The goal is to give you enough context to respond smoothly rather than hitting the brakes at the last second.

Another important innovation is the emergency vehicle warning system

Initially rolling out in the US, Canada, Mexico and France, this feature will alert you when an ambulance or fire truck is approaching your route. In heavy city traffic, where you often hear the siren before you see the lights, knowing exactly where the emergency vehicle is coming from can really help you clear the road faster and avoid accidents.

Waze also addresses two of the most annoying aspects of modern driving: sudden drops in speed and confusing roundabouts. You will now receive a warning when entering a slower speed zone. This is a lifesaver when avoiding speed traps in unfamiliar cities. They also improve roundabout guidance to clearly show which lane you need to be in before entering the roundabout – a huge help to anyone who has ever panicked on a multi-lane roundabout.

In addition, the app learns your habits better and better

It promises to recognize the routes you prefer – even if they aren’t technically the fastest – and give them priority, while still pointing you to a shortcut in terrible traffic.

It’s a bit strange considering these features were originally promised to be released in March 2024, but user reports over the past few weeks confirm that they’re finally rolling out to everyone. With this update, Waze appears to be doubling down on what it does best: leveraging community data to make the chaotic driving experience a little more predictable. It may have taken a while to get here, but for daily commuters these tools are definitely a welcome addition.
