How to plan the best trip to Marfa, Texas

Do you want to travel to Marfa? This is a place definitely worth visiting! Here are our favorite activities, sights, and experiences in the West Texas oasis.

Where to stay:

The Lincoln Marfa is a mix of long-term and short-term rentals right in the heart of the city. The space originally served as a stable yard for the Presidio County Courthouse in the 1890s. Each room in the 16-unit community has been lovingly restored with respect for its history and Marfa-inspired custom details. Because of this, every room on the property is different.

We recommend staying in the new Mary Todd house, which has three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and a shared kitchen. It’s perfect for a small group or you can rent just one room. There are several options for solo travelers and couples, including an authentic bomb shelter!

We absolutely loved the Lincoln and we promise you’ll make lots of new friends there – some might even be great.

What to see/do:

Whether you’re staying at the Lincoln or not, be sure to stop by and pick up the pay phone. If you’re struggling with bad vibrations, you’ll quickly shake them off once you hear what’s coming through the receiver.

No trip to Marfa is complete without a visit to Prada! Other Instagram highlights include the HUGE snaps of the stars in the film giant (which was filmed nearby), the old Stardust sign on the edge of town, the Mystery Lights mural and much more. Everywhere in the city there is something worth photographing.

The Marfa lights are impossible to miss! Everyone has a different experience, but no matter what your experience is, you’ll definitely have something to talk about.

We also recommend a visit to the Marfa Ballroom and the Chinati Foundation Contemporary Art Museum.

Where to shop:

As already mentioned, the film giant was filmed in the area and during filming the cast stayed at the Hotel Paisano. There is a small museum in the hotel, but also a fairly large gift shop. It’s actually more like a boutique.

Other stores where we found a few gems include 6Whiskey, Wrong, the Marfa Wine Co. and our personal favorite The Marfa Store, now located in the Inde/Jacobs Gallery.

Where to eat and drink:

Start your day with coffee and breakfast at The Sentinel Marfa where you can shop, eat and drink. We recommend for dinner Margaret’s And The water stop.

Would you like to enjoy an after-dinner drink in an open-air courtyard? Visit the Lost Horse Saloon, where you can burn off some calories on the porch swing.
