Well, I’m still working on decorating the bedroom. I’m so irritated that it’s taking so long, but all I can do is keep going and keep the end goal in mind. But I took some time off from the trim work yesterday to install the new ceiling light in the foyer. I just had to see something pretty.
If you remember, I had to move the light in the foyer. This foyer used to be much larger than it is today, so the ceiling junction box for lighting was no longer in the middle of the foyer.
After removing the light fixture, installing a junction box in the correct location, and running the cable to the new box, I used this drywall patch to cover the hole for the old junction box.
In fact, I didn’t even remove the old junction box because it was a new work box, meaning it was installed before the drywall was erected. So removing it would have caused even more damage to the drywall and that would have required even more repairs. So I just left the old metal junction box where it is, stuck this patch over it, and then applied the drywall mud to it.
And as you can see, it still needs sanding, priming and painting. I was hoping to get this done yesterday, but when I went to bed last night the drywall mud was still wet. So I have to do it this weekend.
But here is the new light, and I absolutely love it!
Turns out I don’t need to flip the air conditioning vent after all. There is approximately 1 inch of space between the vent cover and the light, allowing it to open freely without hitting the light.
Of course I still have to clean the ventilation cover. I try to change the filter regularly since I’m still working on dusty projects, but I won’t take the time to clean the vent cover until all the dusty projects are finished. I’m so close!! But I just created another dusty project using this drywall patch on the ceiling.
This light is from Wayfair (affiliate link) and overall I really like it. But I would give it a rating of about 8 out of 10 for two reasons.
Firstly, the installation instructions were a joke. I’m pretty sure this light was made in China and the instructions were written by someone who knows very little English. That was very unhelpful. I was able to figure it out because I have installed countless lights in my life. It was pretty simple, but when I took the parts out of the box there were a few parts that confused me and I had no idea how they attached to the mount. But I eventually figured it out through a process of elimination.
And secondly, the ring that hangs from the ceiling (i.e. the canopy or beauty ring or whatever it is called) is made of very thin metal. I wasn’t happy with that at all. The rest of the light is well made, but the canopy just feels thin and cheap, like it could bend easily. Luckily I was able to install it without damaging it. And when it was finished, I liked the look of the light. I still need the right light bulbs for it and also want to get a dimmer switch for the light. The only light bulbs I had on hand are all fake and almost blindingly bright, and I only have two of the four light bulbs in there at the moment.
So until I get the right bulbs, I’ll just leave the light off and admire it as more of a ceiling ornament than a useful ceiling light.
The good news is that I really like it from every angle. It even looks great with the light in the music room, which I’ll show you all once I clean up the music room a bit. Right now it’s cluttered with stuff from this bedroom project.
My main concern was how it would look outside of the closet, but I think it looks amazing! It subtly carries the floral motif to the ceiling, even though it is not necessarily a floral lamp.
So I was able to cross at least one project off my to-do list yesterday, even if it takes forever to cut.
I also found the fabric I will use for one of the cushions for the foyer bench. And it’s a towel! I’ve had these tea towels for a long time and happened to have one in my hand as I walked from the kitchen to the foyer. I threw the towel on the bench and when I came back to get it I realized it would be perfect as a pillowcase!
Since the towels I used were actually used as towels for drying dishes and were washed countless times, I ordered two more new ones to use as pillowcases. I love how it takes the light blue out of the closet and brings that color into the foyer.
So this was a happy accident and a chance discovery. I bought these towels from Werkshoppe and they have so many cute and colorful designs. So if you’re looking for tea towels OR fabric for pillowcases, be sure to check them out!
Well, it looks like I’ll be spending my weekend trimming. I’m not even going to say I’ll finish it this weekend because you all saw last week how well that worked out for me. Pooh. I was so sure I would be finished last Monday, but here I am, still working on the cutting. But at some point it will be done. I just do what I can every day and try to stay focused.
