I didn’t get any work done yesterday because I almost never get a chance to make progress on projects on Wednesdays. As you all know by now, Wednesday is my “family and friends day”. But I have a full, uninterrupted day of work ahead of me and my goal is to make as much progress as possible on decorating the bedroom. In the meantime, I’ve been reconsidering my plans for the studio bathroom, which will be our only guest room for an unknown amount of time between the conversion of the current guest bathroom in the foyer into a storage room and the construction of our addition with the new guest bathroom.
A few weeks ago I shared that I was going to tone things down a bit in the studio bathroom as it would be our temporary guest bathroom. I like a lot of colors and wild patterns, but I didn’t necessarily want to do that to the guests. I mean, let’s be honest, the original pattern I made was fine for me and fun to look at in pictures, but for a lot of people it might be a bit overwhelming and dizzying.
And I think the same goes for the wallpaper I designed for the walls before the whole detour last year when I was planning on converting the bathroom into a walk-in pantry. I never had the wallpaper applied, but it would have looked something like this.
That would have been fine too if the bathroom was just for me. But I think it’s too much for a guest bathroom.
So I suggested that I would just paint the upper walls the same green as the back entrance walls, paint the paneling white and be done with it. But several people balked at this idea, saying (I’ll rephrase) just because it’s a guest bathroom doesn’t mean I have to completely banish my personality and love of color from the room.
I start every morning, seven days a week, sitting at my desk in my studio.
And from there I can see into the studio bathroom. And as I’ve sat at my desk and looked into the bathroom over the last few weeks, I’ve thought about this input more and more. And I think it’s true. While I don’t want the bathroom to be dizzying, overwhelming, or seizure-inducing for guests, I think it can be more “me” than I originally planned. And I think I can do something that fits the overall look of the studio better.
As a reminder, the bathroom is located directly behind this door in the back entrance of the studio. And once the bathroom is finished and looking nice, I probably won’t keep the door closed when the bathroom isn’t in use.
That’s why I’ve now decided to have my floral wallpaper printed smaller (real wallpaper repeat instead of the larger wall size on the studio wall) and use it on the upper walls in the bathroom. I still haven’t decided on the color of the wainscoting. I made two models to try out two colors and then I left one of them white. You have to ignore the reflection in the mirror, but this is what it might look like with green paneling. I would use the same greenery that is in the back entrance of the studio.
The other obvious option would be to use the same pink as the studio cabinets (Sherwin Williams Tuberose) for the paneling. This would really tie the two sides of the room together, but I’m worried it might be too much pink since I have a lot of pink cabinets in the studio.
And then the third option would be to leave it white.
I’m really leaning towards green at the moment. I don’t think I need more pink in the studio and I love that the green goes well with the back entrance walls. So that’s the direction I’m going with this bathroom. And I’m actually really glad that some of you pushed back on my plan a few weeks ago. After all, this won’t be our guest bathroom forever. At some point it will go back to being just a studio bathroom, and I’ll pretty much be the only one using it. So I think it’s okay if it’s a little more “me” than I planned a few weeks ago.
