The long wheelbase Tesla Model Y has reportedly been approved for sale in Europe, increasing the chances of it being offered in Australia.

The user states that the approved variant has an 88 kWh battery, which enables a WLTP range of 681 km when equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Compared to the regular Model Y, the L has a longer wheelbase, extended rear doors and a bulbier rear. This allows seating for six people in three rows, with captain’s chairs in the second row and a 50/50-split bench seat in the rear.
The YL model is 4976 mm long, 1982 mm wide, 1668 mm high and has a wheelbase of 3040 mm. The overall length has increased by 184mm and the wheelbase is 150mm longer than the standard Y. The ride height has been increased by 2mm, the front track is 20mm wider, but the rear track is 12mm narrower.
In China, the only powertrain available is a dual-motor system with a 142kW unit at the front and a 198kW motor driving the rear wheels. Together they deliver a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
There, the Model YL costs ¥339,000 (A$72,800), meaning it is ¥25,500 (A$5,500) more expensive than the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive.
The Model YL is currently only produced in China and it looks like it will – at least initially – be exported from there to Europe and rather produced at Tesla’s German factory.
If this report is correct and the Model YL actually meets EU compliance requirements, its chances of launching in Australia have increased significantly.
Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are broadly similar to those in Europe, although there are some differences, including top restraint point regulations, which have resulted in Honda HR-Vs heading to Australia only having four seat belts, while our unique side impact standards have resulted in models from the Mitsubishi Mirage to the Lexus IS and RC being axed locally.
