Cairo: India’s rising para-powerlifting star Vinay brought glory to the nation by winning the gold medal in the 72kg junior category on the second day of championships at the 2025 World Para-Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Vinay recorded an impressive streak of 137kg, 142kg and 147kg in his three attempts. His final lift of 147 kg was declared invalid by the referees, but his second successful lift of 142 kg was enough to secure the gold medal, narrowly defeating Mikolaj Kociubinski of Poland, who lifted 141 kg. Sebastian F. from Ecuador won the bronze medal with 137 kg.
This is Vinay’s second major international triumph – he previously won gold at the 2024 Para Powerlifting World Cup in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, competing in the 59kg junior category, weighing 120kg.
Vinay hails from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. His journey is characterized by courage and determination. Vinay was born into a poor family – his father works as a daily wage laborer – and his life changed when Mr JP Singh, coach of the Indian para-powerlifting team, discovered his talent at a state-level competition. Under Mr. Singh’s leadership, Vinay transformed his potential into world-class performances.
This gold medal not only makes India very proud but also strengthens Vinay’s position in the qualification path for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics.
After winning the gold medal, an elated Vinay said, “This medal is not just mine – it belongs to every person who believed in me when I had nothing. From Gorakhpur’s small streets to the world stage in Cairo, this journey has not been easy. I thank Indian team coach Mr. Jitender Pal Singh, Mr. Rajinder Singh Rahelu and Nitn Arya Sir, who saw the potential in me as no one else did. I dedicate this gold medal to my family, my country and.” Every young athlete who dares to dream beyond their circumstances.”
JP Singh, coach of the Indian team, said: “Vinay’s victory is a reflection of what can be achieved with hard work, discipline and belief. When I first met him, he had raw strength but no formal training. Today he stands as a world champion. His success shows that with the right support, India’s para-athletes can conquer any global stage.”
India has fielded a strong team of 25 para-powerlifters including 3 juniors and 22 seniors in this World Championships.
