Today is an exciting day because the recliner I ordered for our bedroom is being delivered! I ordered the recliner back in August and it was supposed to arrive on November 11th, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting its arrival.
The armchair is in this corner next to the green dresser. The bench has already been reupholstered and placed in the foyer of the bedroom suite. So I thought a lot about what I wanted to do with the wall behind the chair.
You can see that the only major problem with this wall and in this area in particular is the breaker box. I decided to leave it there and live with it rather than spend a lot of money moving it elsewhere in the house. Actually, it is a very convenient place for quick and easy access. Even though I didn’t like the idea at first, I came around to it.
After all, it’s over in the corner, so it’s out of the way and not in the direct line of sight of anyone entering the room. And I was thinking that I could just cover it with a large piece of art and maybe even attach that piece of art to hinges so that it “opens” like a closet door to access the fuse box.
But the more I tried to plan, the more I realized I hadn’t really thought this through very well. I missed a big problem with this wall: there will be a large, rectangular TV hanging above the dresser. And I can’t really be happy about having a big rectangular TV over the dresser and then another big rectangular piece of art covering the breaker box.
So for the last few weeks I’ve had an idea, but I don’t seem to know exactly how to implement it. Since there will be an armchair in this corner that I envision as a cozy reading nook, I thought it would be nice to have some shelves so I can keep my books (the books I actually read) here. But I don’t necessarily want a full-height bookshelf that sits on the floor because (1) the depth of the bookshelf pushes the chair even further into the room and (2) the shelves behind the chair aren’t easily accessible.
And that gave me the idea of having a wall mounted bookshelf that just covers the wall above the chair rail. I don’t think I can install individual shelves since the whole thing needs to be moved slightly when I need to get to the breaker box. It has to be a whole unit that I can possibly mount on hinges. So I’m wondering if something like this would work…
Of course I can’t find anything big enough for this space. So if I agree with this idea, I have to build it myself. If I build it myself, I’m not sure I can actually get the curved top. I’ll have to do some research and see how exactly this is done.
So that’s the direction I’d like to go with this corner, but I just can’t seem to figure out the details. I have the feeling that if I build it myself, I’ll immediately have a big rectangle again at this point. The good thing is that at least the shelves would add more dimension and I could add some decorative items to the shelves so it doesn’t look like another rectangle on the wall next to the TV. But it also begs the question of how to hang it on the wall in a way that gives me easy access to the breaker box without having to unload shelves and physically remove the whole thing from the wall to get to the breaker box.
Let me know your thoughts and ideas about this. Do you think it’s feasible?
