The fifth edition of KIUG 2025 will be held in seven cities in Rajasthan. A total of 4,448 athletes from 222 universities compete against each other in 23 medal disciplines. The games will be held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India in association with the Rajasthan State Sports Council and will be hosted by Poornima University.
Guru Nanak Dev University won two more gold medals in track cycling and three gold medals in skeet shooting, taking the top spot in the medal standings with 27 gold medals, nine silver medals and ten bronze medals.
The topper from Jain University has also won 27 gold and nine silver medals but has one bronze medal less than the toppers. Lovely Professional University is in third place with 22 gold medals.
Meenakshi, who trains at Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) Patiala, had won both the road races – the time trial and the 80km race, before helping Guru Nanak Dev University clinch the team pursuit title on the first day of the track race.
On Saturday, the 23-year-old showed her tactical best in the scratch race as she held back until the penultimate lap and surprised the two cyclists in front of her by crossing the inside line to take the lead and the gold medal.
Later in the day, Meenakshi (4:14.150 seconds) tried her best to overtake Rejiya Devi (4:12.798 seconds) in the 3km individual pursuit but her tired legs could not keep up with her opponent’s pace and had to settle for a silver medal.
“I’m a little disappointed that I couldn’t win the fifth gold as this is the event where I hold the national record. I tried to catch her in the last few rounds, but I rode the last five days while she was relatively fresh and that made the difference,” she told SAI Media.
Although Meenakshi failed to win gold in her final race, her teammates Niya Sebastian and Ritesh Kaushik won the gold medals in the women’s and men’s 200m sprint, helping GNDU to the second position in the medal tally with 26 gold medals.
At the Jagatpura shooting range, GNDU skeet shooters Rituraj Singh Bundela and Shivani Raikwar clinched the mixed team gold, beating Jyotiradiya Sisodiya and Vanshika Tiwari of Rabindranath Tagore University 44-40 in the final.
Rituraj also secured the individual skeet gold and also helped GNDU win the men’s team gold.
Panjab University’s Simranpreet Kaur Brar secured the gold medal in the women’s 25m pistol event with a final score of 38. Parisha Gupta (32) and Tejaswini (30) from Delhi University secured the silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the wrestling competition that concluded in Bikaner on Saturday, Lovely Professional University topped the table with four gold and three silver medals despite not winning a medal on the final day.
On Saturday, Shivani Yadav of Chandigarh University secured the gold medal in the women’s +86kg category with a total weight of 188kg, while Kesav Bissa of Maharshi Ganga Singh University won the gold medal in the men’s +110kg category with a total weight of 352kg.
In the rugby competition, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology completed the big double by winning both the men’s and women’s competitions. In the women’s final, KIIT defeated Chandigarh University 17-5 to complete a hat-trick of titles. The KIIT men’s team won its first KIUG gold by defeating Chandigarh University 15-10 in extra time.
