Bentley Supersports: Rear-wheel drive Continental is the brand’s lightest car since 1940

The new two-seater Bentley Supersports may be slower than a standard Continental GT, but it looks wilder and is significantly lighter, so the ride should be more engaging.

Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with new cylinder heads, larger turbos and a stronger crankcase to develop 490kW and 800Nm. There’s also a custom Akrapovič exhaust for a more sonorous sound from the tailpipes.

The V8 drives the rear wheels via an automated eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electronic limited-slip differential. The ZF transmission features improved clutches and remapped software for more precise gear changes. The downshifting strategy when braking has been retuned for better stability.

To help the Supersports get out of lane and turn sharply into corners, there’s torque vectoring and a 48V electric roll stabilization system called Bentley Ride.

Bentley claims the Supersports can do the standard 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and will reach a top speed of around 310km/h.

For comparison, the regular Continental GT, which has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain with 575kW/1000Nm and all-wheel drive, accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 335km/h.

The Supersports is the first Continental GT to weigh less than 2000kg and is said to be the lightest Bentley in 85 years. A large part of the savings comes from eliminating the plug-in hybrid’s battery and electric motors as well as all-wheel drive.

Other weight-saving measures include a carbon fiber roof, replacing the rear seats with a leather-wrapped carbon fiber tub, reduced sound deadening, a simplified sound system and the deletion of driver assistance features.

The braking capability is based on what is said to be the “largest automotive braking system in the world”. There are 440mm carbon-silicon carbide discs with 10-piston calipers at the front and 410mm discs with four-piston calipers at the rear. The brake calipers are painted black as standard, red ones are also available as an option.

The Supersports rides on Manthey Racing 22-inch forged and machined alloy wheels in black or black with machined silver accents. Pirelli P-Zero tires are fitted as standard, but buyers can opt for Trofeo RS rubber instead.

For the super sports car, Bentley adopted the handsome body of the Continental GT and gave it the look of a young racing driver. Up front, there’s a new bumper with two cooling ducts on each side (one for the brakes and one for the engine), a front splitter, two pairs of stacked diving surfaces and a laser-cut mesh grille.

Behind the front wheel arches are a set of B-shaped fender blades to regulate airflow along the side of the car, which now features chunky new rocker panels.

At the rear there is a 15mm wider track, a sharper new bumper with vents in the wheel arches and integrated diffuser and a fixed boot lid spoiler.

Inside, there are two new, lightweight sports seats with thicker padding that sit closer to the floor. Buyers can choose between 22 primary colors and 11 secondary colors for leather upholstery, as well as 24 exterior paint finishes.

Just 500 Supersports will be built from the fourth quarter of 2026, with deliveries to customers beginning in early 2027. Orders will begin in March next year, and Australia and New Zealand are among a small number of confirmed markets.
