How AI search is changing organic traffic

AI search is no longer a future threat. This is the current reality, and the numbers behind it are big enough to change the strategic planning of every content publisher.

How many searches now show AI overviews?

AI overviews now appear in over 25% of searches in the US, putting significant pressure on traditional organic click-through rates. This share has increased from almost zero in early 2024 to a quarter of all searches in about 18 months. No SEO strategy developed before the introduction of AI Overviews takes this into account.

The impact on click-through rates is real. When Google answers the question in the search result, a significant portion of users never click on to a website.

Reddit’s R/SEO athttps://www.reddit.com/r/SEO/has documented case studies in which informational content that had previously driven thousands of monthly sessions saw a significant drop in traffic since AI overviews were displayed for these queries.

What types of content are most affected?

Requests for information are under the most pressure. Sites that rely heavily on core informational content may need stronger conversion paths, deeper topic authority, and more helpful page experiences.

The categories least affected by AI overviews are product comparisons with current real-world testing, local business content tied to specific locations, and content with original data that AI cannot synthesize because it does not exist elsewhere.

These types of content require real-world access or unique expertise that AI systems cannot reproduce from training data alone.

Overview of structured data and AI

Sites with full Tier 1 schema see up to 40% more AI overview appearances. Content with correct schema markup is 2.5x more likely to appear in AI-generated answers.

That’s a significant multiplier. If you create content and don’t implement at least the Article, Organization, and BreadcrumbList schema, you will significantly reduce the visibility of your AI search.

What publishers do in response

The most common adaptation strategy is to shift content budgets from purely informational articles to content that requires human judgment, original testing, or local knowledge.

Opinion pieces, original research, practical product reviews, and case studies all hold up better than how-to content and definitional articles.

Quora on https://www.quora.com/How-is-Google-AI-Overviews-affecting-blog-traffic has a handy thread where bloggers share specific numbers on the impact on traffic and the content types that are declining fastest. The consensus is to review your content portfolio by query type before making wholesale changes.
