The fabrics have arrived! (Foyer Bench Fabric, Bedroom Headboard Fabric)

I have high hopes that today will be my last day working on the grasscloth wallpaper. I think I still need to hang four pieces in the foyer, cover two more light switch plates, reinstall a door panel, add a piece of trim around the closet door, and repair a few nail holes in all of the door panels. And then that project gets crossed off the list and I can move on.

And it’s just in time, because the two fabrics I ordered from Spoonflower arrived yesterday, which means I can make all of those final decisions (like the final decision on which direction I want to use the curtain fabric that I shared about two days ago) and start designing all the soft furnishings in the room.

First, here is the fabric for the foyer bench. I absolutely love the fabric. This is the pattern I chose and I had it printed on performance velvet.

Spoonflower velvet is kind of interesting. The pile is very low, so I don’t think it will ever have the truly luxurious look that most standard velvets have. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. And it almost feels like a mix of velvet and felt. It’s different, but I still think it’s good for cat claws, which is why I choose velvet for all my furniture when possible. Velvet is one of the most durable fabrics when it comes to cats who like to scratch. (Of course, your cat’s claws can still cause damage if you don’t trim them regularly.)

The green matches the green I used on the dresser almost perfectly. That was intentional. I chose a paint color that was closest to the fabric color that I could find without color matching. The color of the dresser is Glidden Moss Point Green from Home Depot.

I think I’ll paint the base of the bench the same green to give it more impact. It’s currently sitting in the corner of the bedroom so I can see what it looks like in front of the wainscoting and grass ceiling, since the corner in the foyer where it will actually live doesn’t have a grass ceiling yet. But I think it needs a little extra pop of color with a green base to make it stand out better against the white paneling.

But of course the most exciting fabric I got is the one for the headboard and bed skirt. I selected this pattern for these items and had it printed on 6.5 ounce wide cotton sateen. The fabric is 116 inches wide, which means I don’t have to adjust the pattern or have any seams on the headboard. I was pretty excited when I saw that they offered extra wide fabrics! And the 6.5 ounce cotton has a very comfortable weight that is perfect for light upholstery, curtains, pillows, etc. I wouldn’t cover a sofa with it, but it’s perfect for a headboard and bed skirt.

You need to immediately look for the clutter in the room. I hope to have this all sorted out by the end of the day. But I just love this view of the fabric on the wall from the foyer.

So of course I had to bring the rest of the fabric with me to get a first look at everything together. I’m not going to use this green fabric for the bed, but the green will be on the bed somehow. What I would really like to do is make a striped fabric in all colors, including green, for a pillow.

I was hesitant to include the curtain trim in a photo because I know many of you can’t see my vision for it. Just understand that if I can’t tone it down a bit, I won’t use it. It’s way too bright and white at the moment, but I’m hoping I can do a tea stain (or a coffee stain as someone suggested) to tone down the color, make it more consistent with the corals in the room, and tone down the bright white design. But I could also see what the curtain fabric looks like with the rest of the fabric going in each direction. This is the dark version of the curtain fabric (that is, the pile of the velvet goes up).

And this is the light direction of the curtain fabric (that is, the pile of the velvet goes down).

For me there is a clear winner. Darkness seems to work much better. But the bed also needs some coral, so I brought the only coral fabric I have. I want to use it as an accent somehow. I love my blues and greens, but I still like them more when I combine them with warm colors, whether pink or coral. And of course I don’t use pink in this room, so adding coral on the bed is a must. Here’s a look at it with the light version of the curtain fabric.

And here it is all together with the dark version of the curtain fabric.

So I’m still thinking carefully about how I’m going to add coral and what fabric I’m going to add since I don’t plan on using that green geometric pattern on the bed. I really have my heart set on a striped fabric, so I guess I need to start playing around with some design ideas for it so I can get it printed as soon as possible. In the bedroom model I made I added a striped pillow, so that’s my vision. However, it will need more greenery.

I also need to try some ways to tone down the trim on the curtains. It’s just a touch too bright, too orange and too white. If I can tone it down a little, I think it will be perfect.

I can’t wait to get started on all these other projects! Let’s hope the rest of the grass wallpaper goes well today so I can finish it today. I think I’d like to tackle the curtains next.
