Yesterday I crossed one item off my bathroom to-do list and checked off two others. I decided to leave the ceiling white, so I installed the new ceiling light and then had the vanity painted.
First of all, you’ll remember that I was thinking about painting the ceiling in this bathroom pink. I made a few models of this when I had only painted two of the three rows of wall stripes.
The main reason I wanted a pink blanket is because… well, I love color, and I especially love pink. But I also thought that the new white ceiling light would show up better if the ceiling was painted a color like pink.
But once I finished the stripes, I really liked how the walls looked surrounded by all white. As I said yesterday, it almost felt like the walls were the artwork and the white surrounding the walls on the ceiling and trim above, as well as the wainscoting below (which will be all white) provided the “frame” for the artwork. I thought a pink ceiling might look like an afterthought, competing with the walls for attention.
So in the end I stuck with the white ceiling. And that meant I could install this lovely new ceiling light. This is the lamp I purchased (affiliate link) and I love it so much! I thought it was cute when I took it out of the box, but once I actually mounted it on the ceiling I liked it even more! And I really like the look of the white light against the white background of the ceiling.
I wish I had taken a photo of it yesterday when the lights were off during the brightest part of the day. I took the picture above this morning and the sun doesn’t shine into this bathroom until the afternoon hours. I’ll make a point to take better pictures once this bathroom is finished. But anyway, here’s a look at the fixture with the lights on.
Again, this is an early morning picture, just as the sun was rising, so the lighting isn’t great. But isn’t that a sweet light? Of course I love it! It looks like a flower!
But now comes the decision we have all been waiting for. What color did I choose for the vanity? I really went back and forth on it. One moment I would be 100% sure I wanted green. The next moment I would think that eggplant would be more suitable as a base for this wall design. I had both colors on hand and the color decision was really up in the air until I picked up my brush and went into the studio to paint the vanity. And at that moment I grabbed the green.
Specifically, I chose this green for the wall stripes. This is Sherwin Williams Broccoflower.
Choosing the right green made all the difference in the world. Seeing the previous green, just slightly darker than the color of the back entry wall, against the striped walls, I was almost upset by the thought of a green vanity. The color was just too washed out and dull.
So using the right green really made a big difference. And in the end I think green was the right choice for me. I kept coming back to a comment from someone who said a green vanity would make the room look like a garden and the colorful stripes were like the flowers in the garden. This is the comment that sealed the deal and made me stick with the green.
Here’s a look at the color of the vanity with a look at the back entry walls. You can see that they are different shades of green, but I think they look good together. And I’m actually glad the back entry walls and vanity aren’t the same color. I like the variety.
Of course I’ll take better pictures of the whole area once I’ve cleaned everything up. And you can see that I have a whole lot of cleaning (and probably some paint touch-ups) to do on the floor. When I painted the stripes on the walls, I spilled some paint on the floor. I was absolutely amazed at how durable this floor paint is and I have been able to remove paint from floors in the past using a Magic Eraser. So my color patch here is really going to put it to the test. We’ll see if I can scrub this off the floor or if I need to put another coat of paint on the floor to cover it up.
In any case, I’m pretty excited about the progress. Next comes the wainscoting. I can’t wait to see all that brown wood paneling painted a clean white.
